Game genres that will always be better on a PC than a console.
Typing
This one is obvious. But for those who don't know, there are games in which you must type words in order to win. That is, a keyboard is mandatoryโyou cannot play them with a controller.
Examples:
Typing of the Dead
Epistory โ Typing Chronicles
The Textorcist
Text adventure
If you're a greybeard, these games will be familiar to you. Many adventure games are completely navigable by keyboard inputsโsome of them with a total text interface, no graphics.
Examples:
Zork
Colossal Cave Adventure
The Hitchhikerโs Guide to the Galaxy
Point-and-click adventures
Unlike the previous example, this one does not necessarily require a keyboard. However, it absolutely requires a mouse. The fun is in discovering each clue, what each screen reveals.
Examples:
The Secret of Monkey Island
Sam & Max Hit the Road
Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
Real time strategy (RTS)
While the RTS has sometimes appeared on console, there's a reason they're more popular on PC. This is a genre that needs mouse action and keyboard shortcuts. This because time is of the essence.
Examples:
Command & Conquer
StarCraft
Age of Empires
First person shooter (FPS)
No doubt, the FPS has massively improved on consoles. However, a controller will always play second fiddle to keyboard and mouse. And that's simply because keyboard has more options, and mouse has more accuracy.
Examples:
Doom
FarCry
Call of Duty
Of course, there are several other examples of genres better on PC. But today, I'm keeping this list to five examples.
