Should you share screenshots of Fediverse content on other apps and Web sites?
@evan No. But, if the author allows you, of course you can.
-
Should you share screenshots of Fediverse content on other apps and Web sites?
@evan Yes but only with consent and also share a link to the original for anyone who wants to follow the discussion

Ooh! #242 sighting.

OK, so, I agree with some of the commenters that doing this is excellent guerrilla marketing for the Fediverse. Especially if you include a distinctive username@domain handle in the screenshot. Be cool -- don't say "this is the kind of great content we have on the Fediverse, join now!!!" Just be cool.

I agree with other commenters, though, that there are hazards. People might not be performing for the public. Holding someone up to ridicule ("look at this idiot on the Fediverse!") so they can get dragged on a platform where they can't even respond sucks.
But good content from some of our public thinkers, jokesters and aphorisers? I say go for it. Yes, but.
-
@evan We're talking about things that the author clearly wants to be shared?
@scottmichaud does it say that in the question?
-
No longer being a user of any other SM sites makes this question somewhat personally redundant.
@jeremy_pm s/Should you/Should one/
-
@evan why screenshot? Just use the link to that content…
@Hipska screenshots get more attention and reach.
-
@evan
No, a link is enough.If the post is public, anyone can see it.
If the author deletes posts after a while (automatically or manually), the link becomes invalid. So that's fine.
@beandev is it?
-
@evan assuming the post was public, sure.
How else would we convince people who use other platforms that there's actually stuff worth looking at on here?
I'd include a link to the original but wouldn't count on the viewer's platform interface to parse it.
For webpage content, I'll embed, which preserves the original author's ability to change privacy settings.
@Centretowner I agree!
-
@Hipska screenshots get more attention and reach.
@evan but they take away all context and references
-
@jeremy_pm s/Should you/Should one/
Yeah, for the record I voted no, but

@Hipska I guess it comes down to whether you want to be right or effective.

@evan obv the poll is finished but Im always surprised about these sort of gatekeeping rules posts. Hey, its socmed, many sorts of people are here, there are very few rules except be nice and do good. I share posts to my FB academic brethren, who are mostly normie types who are very mainstream. Its almost like showing off to them how interesting fediverse posts are, and how much engagement they sometimes get. You know, we are here to actually be social, not just grift and build our 'profile'.

@beandev is it?
@evan
If you want to respect the author’s wishes regarding the right to be forgotten (as it applies, at least in the EU), then yes. -

@evan I read that not as "should you share content from the fediverse" but as "how should you share content from the fediverse", especially since fediverse software generally has good to excellent embeds (a thing commercial platforms do not), and those are strictly better than screenshots in every way. So it`s a "no, (prefer embeds) but (if the target wont display them screenshots work)"
