I don't think the US is going to occupy Venezuela.
It has about 30M people. It's about 900,000 km², about the size of Texas + Oklahoma (or Spain + France).
From everything I've read, the US has about 15,000 troops in the Caribbean.
Compare the invasion of Iraq in 2003 -- about half the area, slightly smaller population. The US deployed about 150,000 troops to the area - 10x what are currently in the Caribbean.
@evan they don't need to occupy if they can get what they want without an occupation. However, if they can't...

The conventional wisdom in occupying a territory successfully says you need about 25 personnel per 1000 inhabitants. For Venezuela, that'd require about 750,000 troops. We put about 600,000 into Vietnam, including allies. Iraq and Afghanistan never got close to this level, by the way -- around 5-10 per 1000. In Vietnam, the US had about 30 troops per 1000, and still didn't maintain control.

I think the idea that the US will "run" Venezuela is just Donald Trump running off his mouth.

(Posting this from said Palm) I wonder if people would like actually use their Palms if this existed. Feels like in 2025 there might actually be a market for a semi-online device that like this that can sync via e.g. their Linux phone or desktop at home

@pojntfx I think you responded to the wrong thread.

@evan No, they won't occupy Venezuela that way. They will help someone from the country's right wing to political power to do it for them. Wouldn't be the first time.

#Venezuela@maikek Like in Iraq and Vietnam? That didn't work.

@maikek maybe like the Contras in Nicaragua? That also did not work.

@weyoun6 ...then what? Like I said, there aren't enough troops deployed right now. It's going to take 10x the troops to invade and occupy Venezuela. There's a big difference between a quick strike and an occupation.

@evan I'm crossing my fingers that Edmundo González gets back there quickly and the country unites behind him. But you can't count on it, especially with the Trump Administration meddling.

@maikek there is widespread opposition to Maduro. There are also very few leaders, around the world, who want to ride into the capital on a foreign power's tank. It undermines legitimacy.

@mpjgregoire yeah, it seems unlikely.

@evan I would think they'd seek a more compliant local puppet regime that has good support from the local thuggery, whether military, police, or gangster.

@evan about 1M to occupy Canada.
