So, I think the term "medbed" is a mispronunciation of "medbay" because it doesn't look like a bay, it looks like a bed.

OK, so, here's my theory, completely without evidence:
The film Elysium (2013) proposes a future world in which most humans live on Earth, but a tiny elite live in unbelievable luxury on a satellite called Elysium. Matt Damon's everyman character travels from Earth to Elysium specifically to use a very advanced medical bay or "Med-Bay", which can cure any disease. He is successful, and at the end of the movie, Med-Bays are shipped to Earth to heal all people.
