I want to make a fantasy console Markdown editor with WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS vibes. It was the word processor that I wrote the first fiction that I sold.
(Yes, I could just use actual WP for DOS but might get some actual writing done that way.)
@troublewithwords Did you see this article when it went around? https://www.theregister.com/2024/01/24/rise_and_fall_of_cua/

@troublewithwords hurry up and write book 4 I want book 4
@cloudthethings Sorry, sorry, sorry!
(But keep yelling at me. It's "written" but needs editing and some day I will have enough concentration in one place to do it.)

@eamon I'm afraid I scrolled past it. Adding it to my Sunday read, thank you!

Back in the day, (specifically the Apple //c and DOS 3.1 day) I spend lots of time semi-recreationally writing three kinds of programs. Drawing/animation programs, games (that used the drawings/animations because there were no standard image/animation formats, so yee-haw!) and text editors.
There's a lot less point to making them now, but that's still pretty much all I want to make. The problems remain interesting.

@troublewithwords i always remind myself that tim sweeney's ZZT began its life as a cursor-based text editor. he got so enamoured with moving the cursor around that he started building gameplay around it.

Reveal codes! REVEAL CODES!!
Kids in the lab at the university where I was a "LabOp" thought I was magic when I showed them how to fix their incredibly goofed up formatting ... decades ago.
@VE2UWY @troublewithwords haha, same! At university, I worked in our computer lab, and this was about 50% of my help calls. (Most of the others were registered to Eudora).

@troublewithwords You can even make it literally for DOS by using #jSH 😋

@dec_hl Oh no!
I already have Turbo Pascal running if I really want to dabble in DOS. (Which I also have a pile of nostalgia for since it was what I used for the first commercial software I made.)

Oh, wow. We were not a big Eudora shop it was mostly stuff on the mainframe (no idea what that MUA was) or UNIX (elm, then pine, smattering of mailtool). Pegasus had some traction running against (IIRC) our Netware stuff.
