"Who cares that participating in society requires a smartphone?

  • "Who cares that participating in society requires a smartphone? There are so many options, and they're so cheap now."

"If you don't like Apple's locked down system, just by an Android phone."

"If you don't like what Google is doing to Android, just fork the OS; it's open source!"

"It doesn't matter that banking and payment apps require a verified device. No real users have custom ROMs; just zealots and hackers."

"No, you can't just install whatever you want on your own device. What if someone gets tricked into disabling the four layers of protection and installing spyware? We have to protect them."

"Oh wow, I have to buy an expensive approved device that spies on me and doesn't let me run the software I want, in order to pay my rent? Who could have seen this coming?"

Do you understand why we get upset when people don't take our concerns seriously?

The spicier addendum to this take is that, while I agree that many people who are very vocal about open source kind of suck, it's unacceptable that society punishes everyone for that supposed failure.

It is not my fault that someone on linuxpizzaonline said something mean to you, and if you use that as an excuse for why you don't support regulation and efforts to break free from corporate control, you have done something bad.
