A long, long time ago,
I was taught just how to bake some bread.
And I knew if I had some yeast,
That I could make a luscious feast,
And my breakfast wasn't something I would dread.
And then I learned a new trick,
For good stuff but that's not quick.
Tried some sourdough
It didn't make the bread go.
I can't remember if I cried,
When suddenly it wouldn't rise,
But something touched me deep inside,
The day the starter died.So bye, bye to that sourdough rye.
Fed flour 'n' water just like I oughta,
It was just a good try.
And bakers on the net were telling me why
This is why the starter died,
This is why the starter died. -

This is why the starter died,
This is why the starter died. Now, did you read the recipe
And did you knead the dough then just let it be
Just like the instructions said?
And did you make sure that the dough was warm
Or was it hot enough to cause some harm?
That'll kill the yeast so dead.
Well I know you left it in the sun
And I know you thought you'd make a bun
That dough just wouldn't rise
No doubling in size
Now I think you need to start again
Even though it's really such a pain
I'll hit you with the same refrain
I think your starter died.
