@ireneista my educated 100,000 mile guess for why this particular thing happened is probably because there was a void that needed filling and for better or for worse the free desktop dot org people either volunteered or accepted an offer to hand off responsibility with no significant opposition

@ireneista so only speaking generally, I believe the answer to "why do people love hierarchies" is because most people find external structure to be beneficial in their lives, because hierarchies are structurally useful for coordinating large groups of people, and because self organizing groups are hard to form reliably because most people don't get trained on the nontrivial skills needed to be a good leader and often don't aspire to such positions or want the responsibility

there've been enough things lately that we've mentally bucketed freedesktop.org as not, like.... a well-governed organization
we're not ready to talk about that, we don't know what to say yet, and it's only a tentative conclusion
anyway apparently they're now responsible for the FHS and, ughhhhh. why do people love hierarchical power structures so much? this sort of power consolidation shouldn't even be possible in the free software community
