Council is back. Councillor James Pasternak moves to remove $4 million in near-term funding for a new homeless shelter on Wilson Avenue, saying the project needs more time for consultation.

"We're the leading producer of housing in this country, yet we were cut by $10 million from the Housing Accelerator Fund based on a petty dispute over sixplexes," complains Pasternak.

Bravo asks Pasternak if he's concerned that his motion could delay the opening of the Wilson Ave shelter by 12-18 months, and/or force the city to break design and construction contracts, and/or cost $340K per month as the city is forced to shelter people in hotels. Pasternak is not concerned.

Oggi ho fatto una riunione con un collega che vive a Dubai.
Mi ha raccontato che 2-3 volte al giorno ricevono un messaggio sul telefonino che gli chiede di andare nei rifugi, anche di notte.
Sentono tutto il giorno jet ed elicotteri che volano sopra di loro per andare a intercettare droni e missili iraniani (intercettarli usando i sistemi missilistici costa troppo). Fino ad ora ne hanno intercettati più di 1500 (pensavo ne avessero lanciati meno).
Leggere certe cose sui giornali, o sentirle nei podcast, fa un certo effetto ma sentirsele raccontare da uno che ci si trova in mezzo fa proprio paura.

Fascinating paper: Your Morals Depend on Language (Costa et al., 2014). People make significantly more utilitarian choices in moral dilemmas when the dilemma is presented in a foreign language, apparently because a foreign language dulls emotional responses and shifts the balance toward deliberative thinking.
It matches my own experience. Thinking in a foreign language feels like rendering graphics without GPU acceleration: everything runs on raw CPU, slower and more laborious. After a full day of conversations in English or Japanese, I'm physically exhausted in a way that Korean never does to me. What I didn't quite register until reading this paper is that the “GPU” doing all that fast, effortless processing is largely the emotional system. When it steps back, you end up doing more of the reasoning yourself. Whether that's a feature or a bug probably depends on what you're deciding.

It should be automatic, but I usually run the command manually before the automatic pops up because I am subscribed to the security update announcement mailing list.

@aesthr These days it’s all pretty much automated through things like packagekit on desktops and cron-apt on servers.

@aesthr I assume you mean manually. But my package manager runs that command daily by itself.
I also assume you only mean my normal desktop. On my mini pc that cosplays as a server I run it more often.

@aesthr Around monthly, with at least a week before the device leaves with me for something, or needs to be used for something where reliability matters to me.
