Have you ever wondered which cities are mentioned the most in the Fediverse? I did! I built a small tool that checks the hashtags for the biggest cities in DE, AT, CH, NL, GB, IT, FR and DK.
You can see the results on the map here: https://54gradsoftware.codeberg.page/fedi-cities/.
You can find the software here, along with a list of limitations: https://codeberg.org/54GradSoftware/fedi-cities.This is only a small, limited analysis, but you can see lots of dots everywhere, especially in bigger cities, and generally in Germany and the Netherlands. [1/3]

The method in the software is:
1. The list of cities with a population of 10,000 was generated with the help of @wikidata
2. Converting the city name into slug format.
3. Use the API to look up all hashtags and write the results in software/data/
4. Converting the result .csv data to .geojsonI first tried Tags.pub was as an alternative, but isn't used as much currently to get a similar amount of use. A longer list of limitations are here https://codeberg.org/54GradSoftware/fedi-cities#limitations.
Their is also an interesting thread from @evan about all of this https://cosocial.ca/@evan/116735325125895204Generally speaking, I guess this gives you a rough idea of the current situation in the Fediverse, which is still very much note-centric. You can see the differences between countries. One limitation is that the API only provides the total number of activities and cannot differentiate between content created by bots and content created by humans.
For more lists of public institution have a look at https://mastodon-listen.playground.54gradsoftware.de/
For now, this is a one-time analysis. If it proves interesting enough, one could expand it to other countries or do it regularly. 🤔 [3/3]

@sabrinkmann Listing 'wetter' (weather) as a german city is kind of cute. Talking about the weather is a pretty german thing to do...

@ely_peddler this is one of timespan of data as of 12–13 June 2026 because the API only gives you 7 days of information. You can find the timespan on the Website

@Schepphimself :D like I said the method is really limiited. Other examples are #wimbledon is mostly about tennis and not really the place.

@Profpatsch Good point! I made a map with total hashtags relative to population. Here, it looks a bit different.

@sabrinkmann this is making me wonder how many tiny English towns are actually being picked up when people tag American cities. Tiny little English Portland is huge, and I'm now wondering if there's a city called Yeovil somewhere because I'd be surprised if Yeovil, Somerset is a hive of Fediverse activity

@sabrinkmann cities whose names are common words get a bit inflated I suspect, like Reading
Personally I think #cleethorpes deserves more than a zero blob!

@sabrinkmann
I'm amazed that Boston gets so many mentions - I can't help but wonder if the original Boston is getting confused with the newcomer over the water?
(And could this apply to other cities such as Birmingham?)
I see no easy way of avoiding this. -

@sabrinkmann #Nice work! I think there are a few 'false positives', like the small town of #DAX in south-west and Nice, in the south-east of France ;-)

@sabrinkmann I notice that the Fediverse stops at the borders of #belgium and #luxemburg . They are completely surrounded.
My 50 cents: #brussels #ghent #namur -

My 50 cents: #brussels #ghent #namur@sabrinkmann Perhaps it has something to do with the different languages in Belgium.
#Ghent for instance is #Gand in French and #Gent in Dutch and German.
#Brussels is #Bruxelles (or #Bxl ) in French, #Brussel in Dutch and #Brüssel in German.
Even #Belgium is different: #Belgique , #België and #Belgien respectivelyEDIT: just noticed that BE wasn't included

@sabrinkmann I'm noticing something weird happening: No Belgium cities are mentioned at all.
Might be that the spelling people use is different for what the system checks it with?
I would Imagine Ghent/Gent en Brussels/Bruxelles to pop up at least.
Edit: My comprehensive reading on Monday mornings is... Let's just get some more coffee..
Now noticing your list of countries does not include Belgium.. Whoops...

maybe some smaller cities but with a big university = more active users (students) are mentioned more often.?
