I will elaborate a bit more.

  • I will elaborate a bit more.

    I LOVE hardware.

I LOVE sensors. have problems with basically all my senses (except smell and taste, double-edged sword there), and sensors are a way for me to answer, "is my body gaslighting me or is it really cold in here?" Or "are my lungs acting up again, or is it really actually bad air quality in here?"

I DESPISE how everything tells you how to connect to things, where to connect to things, etc.

I COMPLETELY LOATHE that everything is "Internet default" when sometimes all I want is a fucking sensor that tells me how cold it is outside WITHOUT pinging some AWS server. Or maybe if I do want it on the Internet, I want it on my own terms, not on whatever terms the vendor decided. Or maybe I want it to be hooked up to Iridium and I don't want to pay some system integrator six figures (I mean, granted, you'll be paying a LOT to Iridium, and I mean *A LOT*, BUT THAT IS NOT THE POINT).

I DESPISE how the sensor ecosystem is basically proprietary crap, or "you have to build it yourself." Which I have done! I'm just tired of doing it over and over and over. The firmware isn't hackable. The software isn't reprogrammable. The endpoints aren't changeable.

I HATE how you often can't just get the raw data from the device without lots of weird raw plumbing and god knows what. You don't wanna know the hoops I went through to just to get a Grafana graph of my A/C's temp in the living room. This is NOT something a novice can do.

And I DESPISE how you basically need to set up HomeAssistant to do ANYTHING LIKE THIS with a sensor, or control other devices using data from the sensor, and it is very, very unfun to make HomeAssistant try to do what you want half the time. Shit, my HomeAssistant setup here is like only 4/5 working. I can't be fucked to unfuck it.

    But:

I LOVE open stuff, Creative Commons things. I love making things people can improve upon.

And that is why I am doing a thing to do something about all this.

I don't wanna give it all away because I'm really worried someone will take my idea and I'm actually trying to like, sell this eventually (because as much as I love open ecosystems I also love being able to eat and not having my idea taken by someone else with a team), but I will show a little bit of what I'm doing as I do it. Once I have a demo and I'm ready to launch, I'll be publishing everything. I have a couple PCBs routed, I'm designing an enclosure (if you tried, you could go find what I'm doing in OnShape with that because OH MY FUCKING GOD I CANNOT FUCKING TOLERATE FREECAD), I'm gonna try to make a demo soonish to show y'all what I'm really doing.
