@Phosphenes Nope, they don't chew everything in sight like buns.
At the hours they'll be out it'll be stocked up with a tasty bowl of food anyway, they make a beeline for it -

@bigpawedbear Alas there isn't likely to be any footage of the cats trying it.
The way the baffles are designed, they are unlikely to even be able to get to see the entrance to the main feeding chamber (I went major overkill on them, just to be sure) -

One thing has occurred to me, and is a devastating oversight I am now fixing as a matter of importance as a data controller: CCTV signage.

Normally whenever I do anything with the hedgehog houses I get a 'THAT WON'T STOP A CAT!' guy turn up to be wrong at me
This time I actually designed the entrances myself, based around my understanding of cat anatomy which I only learned to stop them getting in the damn hedgehog houses. I am perfectly placed to 'well, actually...' and not a single such guy has emerged.
I am both thrilled we have moved past it but gutted for my unaired prepared argument
@babe i looked over the details and compared them with the design specs from the local hedgie foundation and the only thing i can wonder is if there's sufficient ventilation but then your climate is not my climate so who am i to judge. You even accounted for protecting the entrance from young ones getting stuck underneath

@marten It is something I gave some thought to, don't worry!
The placement of it is in a spot that's shady by afternoon and so by evening should be well chilled by the time they come along to eat, though part of the reason for having the baffles roof lift up is, if we do get a heatwave, I can wedge them open a bit for extra ventilation if it's needed without them being opened so much as to be ineffectual cat defences

@marten I was a bit more concerned where it came to ventilation for the sleeping box mind you and shortened one of the walls to improve airflow

Studying a Battle Born LFP Battery’s Death Under Controlled Conditions

There has been quite a bit of news recently about the Battle Born LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries and how they are dying in droves if not outright melting their plastic enclosures. Although the subsequent autopsies show molten plastic spacers on the bus bars and discolored metal in addition to very loose wiring, it can be educational to see exactly what is happening during repeated charge-discharge cycles at a fraction of the battery’s rated current. Thus [Will Prowse] recently sacrificed another Battle Born 75 Ah LFP battery to the Engineering QA Gods.This time around the battery was hooked up to test equipment to fully graph out the charging and discharging voltage and current as it was put through its paces. To keep the battery as happy as possible it was charged and discharged at a mere 49A, well below its rated 100A.
Despite this, even after a mere 14 cycles the battery’s BMS would repeatedly disconnect the battery, as recorded by the instruments. Clearly something wasn’t happy inside the battery at this point, but the decision was made to push it a little bit harder while still staying well below the rated current.
This led to the observed failure mode where the BMS disconnects the battery so frequently that practically no current is flowing any more. Incidentally this is why you need to properly load test a battery to see whether it’s still good. In this failure mode there is still voltage on the terminals, but trying to pass any level of current leads to the rapid disconnecting by the BMS, even while as in this case the plastic spacer on the bus bar melts a little bit more.
Despite these very rapid disconnects and observed thermal issues, the BMS never puts the battery into any kind of safe mode as other LFP batteries do, leading to the melting plastic and other issues that have now been repeatedly observed. The discoloration of the battery terminals that originally started the investigation thus appears to be a result of higher charge currents and correspondingly higher temperatures.
Worryingly, Battle Born recently put out a statement – addressed in the video – in which they completely disavow these findings and insist that there is no issue at all with these LFP batteries. Naturally, if you still have any Battle Born LFP installed, you really want to test them properly, or ideally replace them with a less sketchy alternative until some kind of recall is issued.

@jon_bon same here. If I can't do that, then there's really no point in not buying an iPhone. I wonder if Samsung and other Android phone makers have been asked about how this will impact their sales?
