If it gets too much to do polling all the time and that overwhelms the network, maybe we can add directed delivery, publish subscribe style

I love the goals that standards seek to achieve, but more often than not I see the governance aspects used as prisons for the mind and capital S-Standards as agents of cultural division, so don't engage on that front anymore. Not good for my mental health. ❤️

It's about RSS 2.0!
One thing about ActivityPub that makes it hard to implement is that we don't have an explicit description of how a polling mode would work. I started one here: https://w3id.org/fep/b06c
I think it may make sense to describe how RSS 2.0 could fit in the picture, too. Having a defined mapping for RSS items into AS2, defining how IDs and uniqueness can be treated, and so on.

Really sorry - one of the documents that is referenced in the link you've shared was the last time I tried to engage, and the experience was *horrendous*. My good-faith contributions were flat-out rejected by an opinionated tech mini-lord, and your name is on the doc. That's not "protocol development" or consensus building.

My "same picture" take has been (for many, many years) that ActivityPub is two-way RSS with usable identity (even if the standard doesn't admit it). XMPP is the same, and the main innovation from atproto is actually-malleable schemas. Private data will bring it in-line with AP, while perf. optimizations will work the other direction. All asides, though: I care about what the people want, not what the computers want. ❤️

@blaine @cwebber Your take on the topology is spot on, and there's a traceable lineage from polled RSS to pushed RSS to OStatus to ActivityPub. I think AP supports innovation through different schemas, but it really requires supporting the AP API. See https://www.w3.org/wiki/Activity_Streams/Primer/Extensions for examples.

@cwebber I actually do like the PDS part of bluesky, and I like the DID part except for the fact that it's fake. PDSes that can talk to each other via activitypub sounds highly desirable to me.

I just re-read the issue comment history. It's weird that I didn't reply anywhere in here, given that I was tagged. I am sorry that your idea didn't get into the doc, even as a future enhancement. It seems like a useful feature and part of the point of Webfinger.
I opened some new issues on that repo recently. I'm going to reopen this one, if you don't mind. It seems like a really good topic for discussion.

- a skeleton of the wafrn layout, and a throbber.
- eventually, the post.Final time on stopwatch: 2.26 seconds.

Tech people talk about tech too much.
I really really REALLY want to use all the awesome privacy friendly FOSS (and similar) stuff, but I am not a techie person! I don't know how to program, nor do I want to.
And every SINGLE time I try to find out even what thing (OS, program, app, service, etc) to use, let alone how, and I search for it... I get techie-focused answers.
It's complete gibberish to me! Absolutely useless. It makes me feel actively unwelcome even though I really care about using alternatives to Windows, Meta, X and other dystopic nonsense.
For example: I'm like "How do I start a non-enshittified group chat to talk about a thing?" and all the results are technobabble to me. I don't even know if the words they use are supposed to be normal english words or if they refer to orgs or groups or apps or some weird coding wizardry.
I am so lost, every single time.
I stick with it though. But like. I wonder if the tech people realise that this is happening???? Because they probably understand what they're talking about. And they seem to not realise that not everyone does.
I'm not trying to blame or shame anyone or even complaining as such (a little bit complaining, ngl), mostly just giving feedback. This is not an issue with a singe thing but with ALL of it as a whole! Including #GNU #Linux the #Fediverse #Matrix and most #FOSS apps.
My sincere wish: Give non-techie people an EASY TO FIND and easy to read and easy to understand and easy to implement guide about how to use the things as an alternative to using big corporation services, ie, "I just want it to work" and not have to worry about the technical side of things. I'm interested into feasibility, I tried to compile both snac2 and gts with some issues, so i want to see if someone did it, even on a rooted one.But anyway
- you can use a higher >1024 port so no need for root
- a dyndns client for android, with a free dyndns accountmy main instance can change ip or go down for hours, though way less frequently than a mobile phone on mobile data.
a dyndns client will point lucaphone.dyndns.org to my mobile ip:8443 with a quick ttl (matter of 5 minutes time)
all other fediverse servers keep trying for days to sent stuff to lucaphone.dynsdns.org until they resolve the current ip / a running server / with proper keys
