@tml i think this may actually have been a ballista, or the artist may have been confused. Catapults usually threw rocks (or orc heads?) and ballistæ threw projectiles like the red-hot iron arrow here. But i am not an expert in the area :-)

Complete with naked Roman soldiers.
The tip of the arrow is glowing red hot in the original painting.
The book implies Poynter failed to capture movement in this piece, by focusing too much on detail. Not sure i entirely agree, what do you think?

Is it a #switch or a set of #points ? Depends on where you live for one thing.
The design of a system to merge two sets of tracks so that a train can go on either has not really changed much in the past 150 years, at least in the overall design.
I love these old Victorian diagrams with the letters (call-outs as they say in tech publishing) that tie in to the descriptions.
