The Catapult, 1868, Edward Poynter.
Complete with naked Roman soldiers.
The tip of the arrow is glowing red hot in the original painting.
The book implies Poynter failed to capture movement in this piece, by focusing too much on detail. Not sure i entirely agree, what do you think?
Delenda est Carthago.

@barefootliam Fascinating mechanism. I had no idea catapults were used in that way, too, and not just to hurl projectiles from a bowl or bag attached to the arm. Fun how the part that strikes the arrow is shaped like a fist.

@tml i think this may actually have been a ballista, or the artist may have been confused. Catapults usually threw rocks (or orc heads?) and ballistæ threw projectiles like the red-hot iron arrow here. But i am not an expert in the area :-)

@barefootliam @tml This is active enough but very strange. Why naked? And is that catapult going to be powered by the counterweight or the twisted tendons (if that's what they are)? This looks like an artistic mashup of two different designs.
