@sheislaurence did:plc is spinning out to an independent org, relays are only necessary for things at scale (& aren’t used for user discovery), and relays currently cost $20/month for 42M accounts.

I presented at Fedicon last year about a selection of the many apps being built https://bmannconsulting.com/notes/beyond-microblogging-atproto/

For completeness, because of account architecture, ATProto doesn’t have a private data option today.

@evan @sheislaurence that’s a sort of bookmark on my own site and is pretty protocol focused.

@sheislaurence I help support a number of ATProto community resources.

Community blog https://atprotocol.dev and forum https://discourse.atprotocol.community, and I have some collected bookmarks of good articles https://semble.so/profile/bmann.ca/collections/3m5u77miiyf2h

Fun fact: that Semble site is also ATProto powered and you use your same account to store bookmarks

@evan @quillmatiq @dansup well I regret getting tagged into this, I responded up thread.

Dan is yelling at ATProto rather than yelling at Bluesky which of course ends up hitting the very people that care.

@dansup @quillmatiq heya Dan! Going to do the mastodon/activitypub thing - I think you mean Bluesky

ATProto has a thriving community that I and others are part of.

I care about openness and the social web, which is why I spend time with the ATProto community

Feel free to yell at Bluesky-the-company

@mike would email keep working if Gmail shutdown?

Tight coupling of accounts to domain names would mean a lot of people would lose their email identifier.

Those that have their own domains would repoint to a new host.

It would be really tough for a lot of people but yes email would continue.

    Same for ATProto.

@mike conflating Bluesky-the-company and the ATProto community are not great. “Yelling”

It’s like as if I constantly shared the belief that Mastodon GMBH makes all decisions.

It’s wrong, and doesn’t respect the work of everyone that helps build the Fediverse.

I’d ask you to not do this. You don’t have to join, but spreading misinformation doesn’t help anyone.

    Uncategorized bluesky

  • Exactly.
    boris@cosocial.caundefined boris@cosocial.ca

@dmian @scottjenson yep, I agree! Hence this UX research. And why erasing the community I’m helping build is sad.

    @mike it does not.

It’s an open protocol with 1000s of account hosts that anyone can spin up in seconds at low cost.

Oh, and it’s applying to join the IETF, just like SMTP.

@mike @quillmatiq @mmasnick all of the apps I listed and every account all federate with each other. There are over 2000 PDS hosts.

The data lives in every users account. Apps aggregate them as needed. It’s all connected and run by many people.

The criticism you are looking for is “Bluesky hosts too many of the accounts”…

…which the ATProto community is actively bottoms up growing. Yelling at us is not helping.

Got any suggestions? Want to donate? Support Blacksky, invest in Gander.

    boris@cosocial.caundefined boris@cosocial.ca

@dmian @scottjenson ATProto doesn’t have “instances” and this is part of the disconnect with fedi users looking for these full stack installs as they call them.

Here’s my presentation from #Fedicon where I walk through a dozen or so different apps / data types https://bmannconsulting.com/notes/beyond-microblogging-atproto/

Some re-use Bluesky’s microblog type, many others have built their own.

It’s not better, it’s just _different_ with different trade offs.

    Uncategorized bluesky

  • Exactly.
    boris@cosocial.caundefined boris@cosocial.ca

@dmian @scottjenson here’s a (Brazilian) list of PDS account hosts as an example

    https://blog.vicwalker.dev.br/3lz4g6zxeic2p

And fun fact this is a long form blog data type running on the Leaflet app, whose data lives in this user’s account.

I also don’t expect a centralized “join” site because that’s not how ATProto works. Tricky to explain!

    Uncategorized bluesky

  • Exactly.
    boris@cosocial.caundefined boris@cosocial.ca

@dmian @scottjenson there’s a just kicking off UX research project (that Scott just became aware of) that is doing work on the best messaging for this.

Bluesky is one product but also a microblog data type (like ActivityPub Notes type that Mastodon and others implement).

You can choose your account host completely separate even from your app with ATProto, so it’s different.

    Uncategorized bluesky

    @scottjenson appreciate you Scott.

    boris@cosocial.caundefined boris@cosocial.ca

@mike @quillmatiq @mmasnick that’s fine - but “not really moved the needle” is incorrect - there’s a sample of a dozen or so apps, out of many more.

All using the same protocol just like the AP ones you listed.

Go yell at Bluesky! It’s a company! They can do what they do and you can disagree.

The #ATProto community is building bottoms up.

It’s like saying you aren’t going to trust the email network because Gmail and Office365 are involved in routing email. This is how protocols work.

@mike @quillmatiq @mmasnick hey Mike Fraser you were in the audience when I gave this talk at #Fedicon weren’t you?

    https://bmannconsulting.com/notes/beyond-microblogging-atproto/

It has a list of some of the many projects in the ATProto ecosystem

Please don’t erase the #ATProto community. We’re on the same side.

    Uncategorized bluesky

  • Exactly.
    boris@cosocial.caundefined boris@cosocial.ca

@scottjenson once again going to ask that you say #ATProto and not Bluesky.

We’re trying. Like many distributed open source systems, this is bottoms up community work. Pointing at Bluesky-the-company erases our work.

It’s not Bluesky’s job, it’s the ecosystems job.

@evan just happened to see a bunch of videos about new restaurants & got some reccos from folks before I left. I’ve had a lot of the classics ;)

Last night was Au Pied de Cochon https://www.aupieddecochon.ca/us/

Maybe Khyber Pass, several people insisted on Portuguese chicken

    Any recommendations welcome
