The pygmy nuthatches love this mossy post in the park--I find them here every year, flitting in and out of the holes that appear lower down (where many of them hatched earlier in the summer) and peeping at the surrounding pines.

Little Mushroom Aged Fourteen. #DEHG

I found this beautiful mushroom (about three inches tall and four across) yesterday morning.

It reminds me of one of those little papered push-up parasols or, even more, like Degas's Little Dancer, Age Fourteen hiding under a broad, weather-beaten sunhat.

I was out watching quail in the yard when I started to hear (and feel!) buzzing immediately behind me. I turned to find this little fairy hovering at eye level as though e'd been trying to get my attention for hours. Once e was sure I was looking, e immediately darted up and lit in the willow tree for pictures.
