@leguinian_utopia I found the scene really jolting, too--the light was so weird that the marsh looked like some sort of stage and the birds a special effect or somesuch. It was almost supernatural rather than just stormy.

@forestfjord It was thrilling to see and hear, as just before soaring up across the sky like this, they actually rose up from the marsh from behind an "island" of tule rushes which had been hiding them and flew right at me (from a distance) before banking and sailing away.

@catselbow Ah! I see it! That rim of stones is always visible to some degree or other year-round, and it always feels like a sleeping creature to me (it becomes very pangolin-like when the lake is low). Perhaps the stones channel different magic beings seasonally, and winter is the Season of the Magical Sturgeon?
