Hello #UX folk!
Some people seem to think that the "craft of ux" is dead: striving to be polished is naive. E.g. snapchat & Instagram stories, which are horrible UX, are claimed to be "good enough".
I'm writing a blog post exploring this but need links to any examples of this type of good enough thinking?
I'm expecting mostly techbro types will say this
EDIT: I shouldn't have called out Instagram so strongly. It's odd but not horrible.
@tragivictoria that is the one critique I hear over and over: relays are the decentralized weak point of #ATProto.
People love to complain about how odd #ActivityPub data sync is (which is true!) but I'd argue it's "good enough" and has the advantage of working on $5/month servers
@boris totally fair and my apologies. I did say BOTH product names and not their protocols so I'm an equal opportunity oversimplifier.

Exactly. Pointing out that #Bluesky isn't *practically* decentralized yet is not a critique, it's a statement of the work they need to do. (and I wish them luck!)
Mastodon has its own demons to slay. No one is perfect here! We're just talking about how things should improve. I so don't want us to form a circular firing squad. We can all win.
@kevin Welcome! There are MANY things to complain about with the Fediverse but detracters tend to overlook the many positive things about it. I left 30k followers on Twitter to "only" 6K here but my interactions and discussions are far better than what I had there.
It's still fairly small and the community is mostly technical but we're taking a "Long Now" approach here (not a silicon valley burst mode)

@_elena I voted for NextCloud (even though I work with Mastodon!) it has so much more utility for families. Besides, for novices, it's so much better for them to join a bigger instance.
@thibaultamartin I don't think it matters as many people never use CWs the "right way" so will never be caught properly.
Btw, I'm not saying we should never use CWs there could be some strong content that a server wants to always be me marked. But that's up to server admins to enforce not randos yelling at newcomers
We need to talk more about reducing "tone policing" here. I understand you want people to use content warnings, but guess what? They don't have to! If they don't do it, just unfollow them.
But please, don't harass them. That's what drove away our last big wave.
Do whatever you need to feel safe, but harassing people to your standards doesn't make THEM feel safe. Stop it.

The new #Mastodon team is starting to hit its stride! We're about to ship Quote Posts in 4.5 and our next release (4.6) will have (Starter)Packs (name tdb). It's fun to see our momentum building!

#Mastodon trust and safety people, I need your help
I'm trying to understand how "Quiet Public" is used. In nearly every UX discussion I have with people the vast majority not only don't understand it, but it actively confuses them.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't have it, but I would like people to at least know WHY we have this. Given you can already opt out of search results w/ a setting, why you wouldn't just use "Followers only" instead?
