As I head home from Idaho today, I am reflecting on the wonderful visit I had with my family members. While much of the time was spent visiting in their house, several of us also had fun outside adventures together, building new memories. This interesting pattern of mini “landslides” of sand was prevalent along the ridge of the sand dune that I hiked earlier this week. This is a view from the ridge of the dune looking straight down the steep incline. “Streams” of sand would begin flowing down the slope once a hiker disturbed the sand while walking on the ridge. #TextureTuesday #nature #photography

I hiked a large sand dune for the first time yesterday. What a unique experience! Quite a slog, hiking straight up the side to reach the ridge. A surprise with the challenge of walking the ridge— didn’t expect it to be so sharp. The drop-off on each side looked steeper/scarier than it actually was. A fun time! I’m spending a week visiting family here in the great state of Idaho. A long overdue visit— lots to catch up on! Several family members are avid hikers— spent part of today “urban hiking” with them on the Boise River Greenbelt. A very picturesque hike along the river which cuts through neighborhoods and the downtown area. A great way to see Boise! #hiking #nature #photography

This was my last decent view of the valley in Silverthorne today as I descended on the last hike of my trip to #Colorado. This was a very scenic hike as we hiked partway up a pass along a stream to a series of waterfalls. It’s been a great trip! Went to the top of a mountain the easy way today—- on horseback! Rode through beautiful forests of aspen and evergreen trees on the way up and back from the summit which was a large open meadow with views of distant mountains. A great day! #Colorado #mountains #horses

In the spirit of #WaterfallWednesday, I hiked into the mountains outside Vail today to a series of cascading waterfalls! Here is one of the waterfalls (left pic). To take the pic, I needed to scramble down a steep class II/III rock formation (pic on right by Lori H.). Hiked up to a ridge outside of Vail today. The meadows (top left) at lower elevations were just as picturesque as the views from the top (top right). While walking the streets of Breckenridge today, the #mountains maintained a dominant presence. While planning my local hikes for the next few days, I’m also looking toward returning here this winter for #snowshoeing. Summiting to 13,000’ (4,000m) on snowshoes from the trailhead not practical for me after flying in from sea level. But there’s an interesting option of taking the ski lifts up to near one of the peaks (Peak 8), then snowshoeing up the final 800’ of elevation. #Colorado #hiking

Hiked a beautiful trail today just outside Denver at the Red Rocks Park. Stunning rock formations throughout the loop. No bad views here! It was absolutely bone dry on yesterday’s hike and with an intense sun. Felt like hiking in the desert. Another day, another hike! Chose a lower altitude hike today while we still acclimate to the altitude. Hiked in the foothills of Rocky Mountain National Park up a canyon.
