Those stackable connectors were kinda cool.The evolution of data cabling is amazing. Just some 40 years ago, thick and very unwieldy cables like those in the picture were used to transport measly megabytes per second. Now much thinner cables reach gigabytes per second easily. What are the main technological advances that have enabled this?

Actually, I think what happened was that the train in the other direction (EC 393) was delayed one hour or so, and we would get our driver from that train. So we had to wait for that train, and then for the driver to have their lunch break.

@tml having just returned from Japan & South Korea, I have seen what is possible and it makes me sad we don't invest in very high speed train networks in Europe. I love train travel compared to flying, but as a regular traveller from London to Copenhagen, being unable to do it without overnight travel makes it very impractical.

At this stage of a trip, when realising it is time to start going back home, I always start feeling quite homesick and begin planning how to quickly get to Hamburg, Stockholm, and Helsinki. Seems that if I start from Cerbère tomorrow morning, I can be in Basel well in time for the night train to Hamburg, which now even has Mini Cabins. And this without using a single TGV. Yay. #Interrail

But yeah, you have to sit by the window on the better side (which varies), and really know when to look out, to notice the spiral tunnels and see the track higher up or lower down where you travelled a moment ago. There are lots of other trunnels, too. Sadly my train was rather full and I didn't have a window seat.

I used a TGV once from Marseille to Lyon because I had to get to Switzerland quickly to work around a strike the next day – and regretted it already when waiting for the barriers to open.It obviously takes much longer but you get to spend time in small French cities you’ve never heard of but which inevitably turn out to be lovely and nearly entirely devoid of mass tourism.In most cases, the hours long transfer time ends up being too short if you just force yourself to leave the station and explore. (In a way, the Youtube series is a ploy to trick myself into always doing that.)

The royal apartments in the palace are quite impressive, too. What I especially liked was that there were modern art works from the 1980s in almost all rooms. If I understood correctly, these are works ordered to commemorate the devastating earthquake here in 1980. One work per room, one work per artist. Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, Anselm Kiefer, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Robert Rauschenberg and more.
