@jg @Tutanota GPG is used a lot more than one would think if you include indirect uses such as signing Debian packages. For "in case the house burns down" backups, I wrote a program that sets up a LUKS file system on a flash drive and mounts it, with the LUKS password (a long random one) stored on the flash drive in a GPG-encrypted file. I keep the flash drive with my house keys and don't take my GPG keyring with me.

@magnetic_tape I find using hardware tokens onerous in general (it is difficult for me to stand up and walk around the house)if I lose a token I must re-register a new one everywhere, which is a huge cognitive tax on top of that

@gibwar Basically, you cannot be compelled to build software in a free society.But the government can certainly say "if you want to make a living from software, you are required to do X/Y/Z and not do A/B/C" like they do with many other areas.Where software is somewhat unique is the large amount of volunteer/open projects sit on the blurred line in between personal and commercial. Laws like this very much endanger that unique culture.

@jane i argue against specific features, that are often included in "parental control"so far the only thing people convinced me could be okay, is screen timeout timerswhat i get worried is, for a teenager, making it easy to allowlist websites and content types, and making it easy to track everything they do with their devicessure, there is other ways of doings those things, but the easier those tools are to enable and use, the more i saw them get abused
