#MySoCalledSudoLife #Jellyfin@elena This post is super timely. I'm just getting going with self hosting myself. I'm just using an old desktop that I think I got when my father in law passed. I threw Linux Mint on it and got Jellyfin going.
We hit thrift stores and yard sales and I rip DVDs during the work day since I'm remote.
My current self hosting project is FreshRSS. So far so good!

I don't think it matters that much how your setup will look like. I would consider how it fits the current hardware setup you use, how the service will be accessed and how will be the data protected.
For start and confirming it works for you, the easiest setup makes sense.

Sorry for the super newbie question but are there tutorials about how to repurpose an old Macbook Air (or Pro) for this? Or is it impossible with Macs?
If you have any recommended readings/tutorials, I'm all ears (I've got two old Macbook laptops lying around).
And yes in my film days I ripped so many DVDs... I have a large library waiting to be organized in Jellyfin -

@Sobex There's one other big downside: power management really isn't very good on most of the modules *yet*. I think some of the older modules have suspend, but hibernate is kinda working on the RK3588, no suspend yet. I do think this is a big barrier to adoption for many people.

@Sobex Usually arm64/aarch64, but there are some other modules, including a (soon to be revived) FPGA module (that one's just for some very particular developers), and there were some demos of a RISC-V module. But it's generally ARM64.

@Sobex The downsides for MNT, if you're looking for a drop-in replacement:
- There's no current x86 offering, if that's important to you
- You *will* have to hack it at some point probably, but it's highly hackable!
- The MNT Reform Next isn't out yet, so either you have this incredibly cute pocket computer, or you have the chonker "brutalist" (but highly hackable) original MNT Reform

@aeva the cat did this to me last night. Managed to knock over a package I thought was secure enough... made a loud noise. Thankfully he didn't get hurt!

@Sobex It's not necessarily, I have been advocating MNT's stuff for a long time.
But let me say that I think that if you *are* disappointed with Framework's actions then consider that MNT is:
- An indie, queer open hardware shop based out of Berlin
- All of their stuff really is as open hardware as they can make it
- The community is just lovely
