guys, what’s the coolest first name you’ve ever seen or heard in person? doesn’t have to be a name you’d give your own kid, just something that made you go “damn, what a cool name”.
I ask because one of my nephew’s besties is called Endeavour and that is a COOL name.
(his mates call him Noun, which is hilarious)
@astronomerritt I found my father-in-law had an aunt called Aviellria. I loved it so much that I gave it to my main character in my fantasy WIP.
Endeavour always makes me think of Inspector Morse. But I do like Verity as a name.
My sister was going to name her son Eben. But she abandoned it because everyone kept saying, 'What, you mean Ebenezer?' Some people associated it with Scrooge, but I could only think "E's are good E's are good. He's Ebenezer Good!'

@astronomerritt I knew a Gandalf. He was a hip-hop dance teacher. (I didn't know him to talk to. He was far too cool - partly because of the dancing, partly because of the name.)
@rhamphorhynchus Holy shit. The double barrel of being called Gandalf AND teaching hip-hop dance? Yeah, that's TOO cool, I'd be intimidated too.

@roknrol This is perhaps a personal question, but do you find that people get weirdly offended when you say things like that? I was raised by an abusive grandmother and I often express relief and joy that she's dead, and people can be SO WEIRD about that. It's refreshing to hear someone else say a hearty "good riddance" about a family member.
@astronomerritt Yeah, people are very weird about it. More weird when i was younger than these days though. People really don't seem to like the idea that someone's absence could be so welcome. I feel, perhaps, that they might be inspecting their own relationship with their kids in those moments.
I'm autistic...there is not much that i wont overshare 🤣

@astronomerritt @roknrol They don’t suddenly become good people just because they did the decent thing for once and died. It’s important not to whitewash dead people imo

Me too! And I was just thinking there's a definite difference between the 60/70s flower child names and the nonbinary nature names I'm hearing recently, though I'm not sure exactly what the difference is. I also met a Winter recently and I really liked that too.

@roknrol I don't have autism as an excuse, I just don't see the point of lying about her or pretending I'm sad she's gone. She didn't deserve that.
I think people really are thinking about their own family when they react, and I think a lot of them are coming from a place of privilege where they have nice families they get along well with, and can't seem to comprehend that some of us are related to irredeemable arseholes.

I do like many of the Cornish names, like Kerenza, Elowen, Morwenna, Blejan.

@emma_cogdev I think a lot of the non-binary names are blunter and less "pretty", if that makes sense? There seems to be more of a willingness to name yourself after something that maybe isn't conventionally or universally pleasing.

Same applies to anything else.. law, cooking, building etc.
