guys, what’s the coolest first name you’ve ever seen or heard in person?
-
I'm pretty jealous of cool names because our parents gave us the most 80s American soap opera names possible. To be fair, they weren't very common in the UK, but even still.
@astronomerritt I'm still happy to discover The Avengers was being repeated when I was born so I am named after Emma Peel.
-
@astronomerritt One of my besties from Uni called her daughter Persephone, which has inevitably been shorted to "Percy".
@kittylyst I've always loved the idea of Persephone as a name, but always thought "that's just asking to be called Percy though", so I feel quite vindicated to learn I was right 😆

@astronomerritt My mother promised her dad on his deathbed that if she ever had a son, she'd give his name (James). Was a big fight after I was born over that. I was given James as my middle name, which was different than my dad's (John), but he insisted that I have 'Jr' tacked on anyway. 'Junior' was actually part of my name until I changed it.
A repulsive man. 'Asshole' is the nicer way of putting it. Calling him what he was would get a Youtube video demonitized.
@roknrol He sounds like an absolute fucking dirtbag, pardon my French.

@Emmacox Now that's a pretty cool namesake!

@astronomerritt He's dead, and good riddance. No idea where he'd be politically these days, but he almost certainly wouldn't have voted for the black woman.

@roknrol This is perhaps a personal question, but do you find that people get weirdly offended when you say things like that? I was raised by an abusive grandmother and I often express relief and joy that she's dead, and people can be SO WEIRD about that. It's refreshing to hear someone else say a hearty "good riddance" about a family member.

guys, what’s the coolest first name you’ve ever seen or heard in person? doesn’t have to be a name you’d give your own kid, just something that made you go “damn, what a cool name”.
I ask because one of my nephew’s besties is called Endeavour and that is a COOL name.
(his mates call him Noun, which is hilarious)
@astronomerritt I knew a Gandalf. He was a hip-hop dance teacher. (I didn't know him to talk to. He was far too cool - partly because of the dancing, partly because of the name.)

@astronomerritt I found my father-in-law had an aunt called Aviellria. I loved it so much that I gave it to my main character in my fantasy WIP.
Endeavour always makes me think of Inspector Morse. But I do like Verity as a name.
My sister was going to name her son Eben. But she abandoned it because everyone kept saying, 'What, you mean Ebenezer?' Some people associated it with Scrooge, but I could only think "E's are good E's are good. He's Ebenezer Good!'

@rhamphorhynchus Holy shit. The double barrel of being called Gandalf AND teaching hip-hop dance? Yeah, that's TOO cool, I'd be intimidated too.
-

@astronomerritt Sadly, I can't pull off the catsuit look like Diana Rigg could.

@Emmacox Aviellria is really unusual! Do you know where it came from?
I also really like Verity.
Also, yes, that is EXACTLY what would have happened in my brain if I came across a kid called Eben. I get that song stuck in my head a lot as it is, for some reason.

I saw a Moss recently, I think that's a cool name 😊

@emma_cogdev Moss is a really cute name! I like nature nouns for names.

@astronomerritt Yeah, people are very weird about it. More weird when i was younger than these days though. People really don't seem to like the idea that someone's absence could be so welcome. I feel, perhaps, that they might be inspecting their own relationship with their kids in those moments.
I'm autistic...there is not much that i wont overshare 🤣

@astronomerritt @roknrol They don’t suddenly become good people just because they did the decent thing for once and died. It’s important not to whitewash dead people imo

Me too! And I was just thinking there's a definite difference between the 60/70s flower child names and the nonbinary nature names I'm hearing recently, though I'm not sure exactly what the difference is. I also met a Winter recently and I really liked that too.

@maia @astronomerritt I absolutely agree with this.

@roknrol I don't have autism as an excuse, I just don't see the point of lying about her or pretending I'm sad she's gone. She didn't deserve that.
I think people really are thinking about their own family when they react, and I think a lot of them are coming from a place of privilege where they have nice families they get along well with, and can't seem to comprehend that some of us are related to irredeemable arseholes.
-

@roknrol Same, 100%.

@astronomerritt I don't, and sadly my FIL passed away two years ago not long after his sister so there isn't anyone left to ask.
I do like many of the Cornish names, like Kerenza, Elowen, Morwenna, Blejan.
