@whitequark heard from some folks that it's getting pretty common to see laptops without RAM cause the RAM costs more than the rest of the laptop.
@elexia @whitequark my thought is to buy up all these RAM and SSD less laptops and wait for the crash. Then buy cheap missing parts :)

@whitequark Shame all my spare SoDimms are only 4GB.
That and I think the one system this might have been interesting to try in it wouldn't work due to clearance on the CPU cooler.

@elexia @whitequark There are repair shops whose whole business model used to be buying old/broken computers on ebay, repairing them and reselling them for a reasonable price. They basically can't do that anymore because everything on the market is now either stripped clean or way too expensive.

@jn @RedstoneLP2 @whitequark But using these adapters makes it tall! So tall it won't fit in some positions in some configurations.
@whitequark @ozzelot @RedstoneLP2 @jn not substantially taller than modern "gaming" RAM with all those flashy RGBs and whatnot tbh
(which also wouldn't in my setup though, which i luckily maxed out before the AI bubble)

@aeva Oh for sure, I don't think anything could get me to fully switch, I just remember really anticipating one of them roughly a decade ago and I've always been really curious about them lol. Nothing beats the scratch scratch of pen on paper though

All of my engineering career if I want to explain to friends what I do I have to describe in way too much detail how trunked terrestrial emergency radio systems, advanced train signalling or aerospace composite tooling systems worked.
It was nice during my stint at Blackberry when I could just take out my phone, point to it and say "the Whatsaflam app? I did that."
