@eniko How about further back? Flat actually can look good when it's the right balance IMO. Windows 2000 and XP with themes disabled still was one of the best looking GUIs to my mind. (9x/NT4 too, but I feel like 2000/XP hit the peak of what that sort of design could do with a bit more color and such.) Simple, clean, very flat, but not quite too flat.
I do very much like minimalism though. I'm using a pretty flat style today even though KDE is very customizable. It's very hard to get just the right balance, but also I really really want dark themes now that I actually can do it and things work right. (If you set Windows to a dark theme back then a lot of stuff would ignore theme settings and give black fonts on a dark gray background or etc...)

@eniko Only on the classic theme (which was really the Windows 2000 look). After that it went to shit fast.

@nazokiyoubinbou @eniko The Windows 95-2000 UI is an example of doing a lot with very few pixels but they're still very dimensional and not intended to be "flat" in the same way.
