Today I'm decommissioning my work laptop, and moving to a new machine. The 3-year leasing period is over.
The old one is an M1 Macbook Pro. While on previous occasions I really looked forward to the performance boost of a new laptop, with this one, I would have just kept using it for another 1-2 years.
The replacement is an M4 Macbook Air. According to colleagues, it's marginally nicer. But not "OMG shut up and take my money" nicer.

@stefano Cool! I hope you get the BSD on the new laptop nicely tuned up eventually.
At work, I have to use all the Microsoft 365 stuff, so that gets layered on top of the machine's MacOS. It sure doesn't make things run any faster. And then there's all the usual corporate device management + endpoint security crap.
Still, the M1 is powering through all this cruft quite admirably. Unlike the Windows machines that my colleagues use...

@slothrop It's a great chipset. Probably one of the best laptops I've ever had, and surely the one I've used more.

Quando si parla di tecnologia è facile prendere cantonate, quindi mi accollo il rischio.
Chi pensa che l'IA sia uno strumento cruciale, importante da imparare, sottovaluta il rischio di diventare dipendenti da uno strumento che NON SI POSSIEDE. Che non ci appartiene, e che anzi è saldamente nelle mani delle realtà più problematiche del capitalismo estrattivo.
Il feudalesimo digitale non cerca alleati, vuole sudditi. Stanno sfruttando anche voi.

Tutti i collaborazionisti di OpenAI che in questo momento si stanno affollando su SORA 2 stanno regalando all'azienda qualcosa di prezioso:
prompt per creare video virali/interessanti/sfiziosi o comunque in grado di intrattenere qualche essere umano.
Sono pronto a scommettere che OpenAI sta raccogliendo i prompt e che addestrerà un modello per farli al posto loro.
Rimuovendo l'ultimo residuo di umanità dall'equazione si ottimizzano i guadagni.
I prompter si troveranno col cerino in mano.

Il che ci riporta a SORA 2, che si presenta sia come tool per creare, sia come piattaforma/app modellata su TikTok.
Un feed infinito di sbobba IA, in formato doomscrollabile. Infilaci della pubblicità e qualche tracker per rubare dati personali (stile Meta), e potresti avere in mano qualcosa di effettivamente redditizio.
In questa equazione, per guadagnare davvero, c'è qualcosa da rimuovere: gli utenti che usano SORA per creare i loro video. Costano. Sprecano. Servono, ma solo per ora.
