I can't believe the Democratic Party of the US is heading into another catastrophic election season without working out a better plan for Gaza.

@mpjgregoire he is!
@mpjgregoire I think a lot of people scoffed at this when it came up. A lot of the rest of us know that identity is something that doesn't always fit into an easy slot on a form. Having to deny part of your identity to fit into a specific box is dehumanising. I like that Mamdani found a way to connect to his heritage on the form.

@evan Maybe. Sure, identities are complex. But if the purpose of that question on the form was to make it easier for Black applicants to get into Columbia, then it would be unfair for him to benefit.

@elplatt about half a million fewer in swing states with raw numbers.

@evan Let's talk about the analysis in that article. The 700,000 uncommitted votes were in the primary, not in the general. The 422,000 number is voter demobilization, not Gaza. The article talks about states where elections "have" been won by 10k votes without mentioning that the actual margins were much higher in 2024, between 30k and 187k. The total number of D votes lost in swing states was 78,519 vs a 810,994 gain for Republicans. The article is intentionally misleading.

@elplatt I trust Al-Shabaka. If you think no changes are needed to Democratic Party policies and platforms, or that they'd be harmful, I encourage you to let your representatives and party leaders know.

@evan No, not really. I've spent too many years listening to #GlennLoury to do so.
But I think there's a stronger case for #AffirmativeAction in university admissions for Black Americans than for Mr. Mamdani.

@evan Sure, Mr. Mamdani's identity is complex, and he's African-American in a certain sense.
The really surprising thing is that he wasn't accepted by Columbia, despite his father's being a professor there and his family's wealth.
