I can't believe the Democratic Party of the US is heading into another catastrophic election season without working out a better plan for Gaza.
-
@evan pretty simple plan this time: arms embargo on Israel, authorize use of military force to protect a humanitarian mission in Gaza, and push a Palestinian state.
@mcnado it's honestly what we'd do anywhere else without a second thought.
-
@evan I'd prefer a better position from many elected Dems, but I don't think a lack of one hurts them in the house elections. Someone could maybe make the case for harm in specific Senate races. They can run on anti-Trump sentiment do well.

@weyoun6 how'd that go in 2024?
-
@evan Based on the analysis I've read, Gaza didn't split the party last time, at least not in a way that made a difference. In terms of vote counts, Democratic candidates did well in swing states, comparable to 2020, but Republican turnout was significantly higher than usual. Not a defense of the Democratic party or platform though.
@elplatt and Democrats stayed home.

It's interesting to see men of South Asian descent involved in progressive politics in the USA. There's probably a lot of conflation of ethnic backgrounds in voters' minds.
If pushed, I'd estimate that a double-digit percentage of the New York electorate believes mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is Arab.
Maybe that will happen with Chakrabarti also.
@evan He's African-American, no?

@evan It's just not true. Look at the swing states. A comparable number of Democrats voted in 2020 and 2024.

@mpjgregoire he is!

@elplatt about half a million fewer in swing states with raw numbers.

@evan If the democratic party wants to fracture over foreign policy...while a fascist movement is gaining strength, they deserve the pain.
@ethanOS I agree. We have to concentrate on our shared values, like democracy, multiculturalism and fundamental human rights.

@mpjgregoire I think a lot of people scoffed at this when it came up. A lot of the rest of us know that identity is something that doesn't always fit into an easy slot on a form. Having to deny part of your identity to fit into a specific box is dehumanising. I like that Mamdani found a way to connect to his heritage on the form.

@evan Maybe. Sure, identities are complex. But if the purpose of that question on the form was to make it easier for Black applicants to get into Columbia, then it would be unfair for him to benefit.
