The fediverse really needs proper group support. It's a serious omission that we still don't. Fediverse wide. No Friendica and Lemmy and Piefed do not have what is needed implemented yet.

@liaizon you know what I also miss?
Nothing in social media has ever come close to the Facebook event. It was such a practical feature.
As for groups, they are also great. We have lists, and that's a good start.
But perhaps the folks at Mastodon are working on some of these things... @mellifluousbox 😉 💜 -

Mobilizon is the most used event platform for the Fediverse. I don't know how it works on Facebook, so I can't say if it has the same features.
There is also the Event Federation project (event-federation.eu), which is supported by NLnet and funded by the EU.
The nice thing is that I use Friendica, which is different from Mastodon, and Friendica has a calendar option. Events that I see in my feed are automatically added to the calendar (see picture). There's room for improvement, such as the ability to define a region and see a list of attendees, but I guess it's only a matter of time before people start using federated event tools for event management.

But Mastodon doesn't support proper interaction with it yet: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/20407

@silverpill Speaking for PieFed (less familiar with the others), the private communities it just introduced are limited to members of one server.
What I think @liaizon is getting at is ActivityPub groups that you can join and leave and post "into" from any server, such that any member can see everything in the group, and non-members can see none of the contents.
Can Friendica do that? It wouldn't surprise me, but I haven't tried it.

@julian @silverpill yep exactly. I have never seen a fedi thing do even rough members only groups like there are in Facebook. I think more importantly then private ones are publicly viewable and sharable but not publicly participatable

@liaizon @silverpill I think @Bonfire's groups proposal (https://bonfirenetworks.org/posts/why-community-matters-groups-as-the-next-step-for-the-fediverse/) covers the topic pretty thoroughly. Not sure if they've already done any spec work, but if anyone is building something like this I'd recommend coordinating with them.
