  • 👀 From the Verge's interview with Connor Hayes, the head of Threads:

    Threads still supports federation with other apps like Mastodon, but Hayes was clear that it’s not a top priority for the current roadmap. “It’s something that we’re supporting, it’s something that we’re maintaining, but it’s not the thing that we’re talking about that’s gonna help the app break out,” he said.

    “As someone who has built a zillion consumer products, it’s just really hard to keep these divergent platforms and products consistent on the same protocol over time,” he explained. “There’s always going to be the trade-offs that these companies are thinking about of how much energy do I want to pour into compatibility with this ecosystem versus iterating on this thing I’m building and seeing what’s valuable.”

    So wow, it's almost like Mark F---ing Zuckerberg was LYING when he talked about the importance of decentralization when Threads launched! Who, who could have predicted?

    Although of course, they're Meta, they could well be lying again. So let's not get complacent here. Still, it's a good opportunity to take a moment to laugh at all the fediverse influencers who pointed to Threads adoption of ActivityPub as a huge victory for our cause -- and a key ingredient to fedi's success going forward. How'd that work out?

    And let's also give credit where credit is due: @FediPact and everybody else who pushed back so strongly against Threads and made it clear that so many of us really don't want them here. They've got infinite resources, and If they were seeing value from the integration, they'd continue to push it. It sounds like they're not, at least for now. Good news!!!!

    @thenexusofprivacy @FediPact

    They have not yet figured out how to exploit Threads into the thin wedge that controls - and monetizes - the fedi. So, they're going to not work too hard on keeping Threads going, but they are still looking for that inroad.

    Maintain paranoia proximity alerts at all times.

    @reiver I'd consider interoperating social networks to be "federated", but I know it's not a precise term. There are similar ambiguities with other commonly used terms: decentralization, server, node, instance, and so on. We have our personal definitions but find that others have a different mental model than ours. It might be interesting to have a collaborative social web glossary that captures the variations of how these terms are used.

    They really are the bad guy. It is absolutely wild what they are able to get away with.

    Threads, la nueva red social de Meta, serĂĄ compatible con el Fediverso. ÂżEs esto una buena noticia? La historia parece indicar que no, ya que es probable que la multinacional estĂ© desplegando una estrategia llamada "Adopta, Extiende, Extingue".. Las grandes compañías tech, las que estĂĄn incluĂdas en las siglas GAFAM, esto es, Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon y Microsoft, son conocidas por sus supuestas (o a veces no tan supuestas) prĂĄcticas monopolĂsticas. Solo a modo de ejemplo, una rĂĄpida bĂșsqueda en internet nos proporciona casos como: - El departamento de justicia contra google. - La FTC contra Facebook. - Y otros casos similares de los estados de Tejas, Colorado y Utah contra google. No obstante, Meta (ose podrĂa enfrentar hoy en dĂa a un competidor que no puede ser comprado: el Fediverso. En el vĂdeo anterior os introduje un poco a este mundo del fediverso. El fediverso es un grupo descentralizado de servidores que usan el protocolo ActivityPub para comunicarse entre ellos. ActivityPub es un protocolo de red abierto para crear redes sociales descentralizadas. BĂĄsicamente, este protocolo proporciona una API cliente-servidor para crear, actualizar y eliminar contenidos, asĂ como una API federada de servidor a servidor para enviar notificaciones y contenidos. El resultado es que con este protocolo se han creado redes sociales federadas y descentralizadas, como Mastodon (que serĂa como un Twitter), PeerTube (que serĂa como un Youtube), Lemmy (que serĂa como un Reddit), y otras. De los enormes beneficios que aportan estas redes descentralizadas, federadas, y FOSS, ya hablĂ© en mi vĂdeo anterior. La idea de este vĂdeo es ver los mecanismos que tienen las grandes tecnolĂłgicas para acabar con esta competencia, que no pueden comprar como ha hecho en otras ocasiones, ya que no es propiedad de nadie, sino el resultado de la comunicaciĂłn espontĂĄnea entre muchos servidores. 🕒 Marcas temporales: 00:00 IntroducciĂłn 00:26 El Fediverso como amenaza 02:48 "Adopta, Extiende, Extingue" 04:32 Google vs XMPP 12:27 El origen de la estrategia 14:44 Meta vs Fediverso 15:50 La prueba 16:16 ConclusiĂłn: ÂżquĂ© podemos hacer? đŸ”” Algunos enlaces relevantes: 🔗 ArtĂculo en que me he basado: https://ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-kill-decentralised-networks.html 🔗 Casos judiciales GAFAM: https://www.economicliberties.us/tech-lawsuit-timelines/ 🔗 Threads: https://www.xataka.com/basics/threads-instagram-que-como-funciona-que-promete-esta-red-social 🔗 Fediverso: https://fediverse.party/ 🔮 VÍDEOS QUE YOUTUBE NO TE RECOMIENDA https://youtu.be/EQy9g-U0VYM https://youtu.be/tzkb-qH-uYU 🟱 CONTRIBUYE A LA DIFUSIÓN DEL SOFTWARE LIBRE: 🩇 Donando BAT si usas Brave Browser đŸȘ™ Bitcoin (BTC): bc1qtmpr2k40kquq6scchv9dre65lahjr2gxrpdp69 đŸŒ©ïž Bitcoin lightning (BTC): https://getalby.com/p/linuxchad đŸ•”ïž Monero (XMR): 86LXrzSe7wfLAsWVftebH3UNozb6Pf5K8KKooBRo47BYhge4HmzEeaBHa3twGe3hmjG5UPUm6DrFhi2tZVPnaxm752vhZ9f
