Literally gonna die of "penny wise, pound foolish" some day.

  • Literally gonna die of "penny wise, pound foolish" some day. I bought a server GPU (Radeon Pro V620), which does not include any cooling onboard, because it's the only way to get a 32GB GPU really cheap. I assumed the 3D printed fan shrouds on Thingiverse would do something useful, why else would someone make and publish them? But, so far, the only one that fits in my quite large case doesn't provide sufficient cooling. GPU goes into thermal shutdown in under five minutes when under load.

Could have bought a 9700, at the time, for $1300, and it would have worked fine with no hassle. Now, those cost $2200. So, now I have to make this server class thing work one way or another. Gonna try yet another shroud with double fans, which looks like it'll fit, and maybe put a slot mounted fan pulling air across the top. Not exactly feeling optimistic, as the current one-fan shroud isn't even in the ballpark of sufficient. Can't imagine a second fan of the same size/speed will solve it.

A model for mounting a 120mm fan has a comment saying it's also insufficient, so there's that. Seems like a snail blower is maybe the only option, and they're so long I don't think it'll fit in this case. At least that's what all the GPUs with built-in cooling use, though, so at least I know it's the right amount of air flow, and I need a bigger case, anyway, so I can install the second GPU (because if I can't keep one cool, why wouldn't I double the amount of heat to be dealt with?).
