May I tap into Mastodon's hive mind?
A dear person in our circle had a complicated meniscus surgery. She's very extroverted and doesn't deal well with being sofa-bound, barred from all pasttimes she loves (her beauty business, cooking).
Do you folks have recommendations for activities in coming weeks/months, when she's faced with a lot of alone time? Otherwise there might be bloodshed in the family.(P.S.: Reading and crafts probably aren't her thing. Though we will suggest it).
@eyeling online board games?

@bouncinglime @eyeling I was going to say multiplayer videogames.

@eyeling sounds like a great time for her to get really into MMOs

@eyeling yeah most of my suggestions would be in the video game genre, but fwiw there's a huge breadth of variety available depending on what she's into

I was just imagining her in a headset and discord voicechat planning a raid. Thank you for that mental image. 🤣
She indeed was into farming simulators a few years ago. Not sure if it is wise to rekindle that particular addiction, but both of her sons might get desperate.
And playing with family members who are to far away to visit anyway might be a good idea. -

@ephesossh She was into farming simulators a few years back. However, she's chronically online enough as it is. Less screentime would be better.

@aeva She's chronically online enough as it is chatting to anyone under the sun. 😅

@eyeling perfect. hook her up with critically acclaimed mmorpg final fantasy xiv

@enriquericos @bouncinglime Same! So are most of her immediate family. That's our core problem: That poor woman is surrounded by people who can't relate to her problem. Most of us in her position would find things to do, watch, craft, play... But she's getting desperate without outside input and human connection.
That 'fearing bloodshed' comment was not purely in jest. -

@eyeling Sorry for butting in. Unfortunately, my English isn't very good. If I understand correctly, your friend likes her beauty business and cooking—maybe she could do a video blog about it over the next few weeks and months? That way, she could do what she loves and interact with people, as well as make new contacts.
It's just a thought. For my part, I wish her a speedy recovery! -

@eyeling very valid, it's possible she would like Stardew Valley but it can absolutely be a bit of a rabbit hole. Huge community though!
There are some neat single-player journaling based #ttrpgs, where it's you and some dice and a book. Thousand Year Old Vampire is great for that, and I've recently discovered Lighthouse At The End Of The World.

Sie ist nicht sehr technophil. Nutzt zwar Chats und Videostreams, aber nur zum Austausch mit Leuten aus "dem echten Leben".

@eyeling Any interest in picking up an instrument? Could be fun to dive into ukelele or learn to play trumpet. Could be a neat way to get her connected to other folks once she's off the couch.

That 'fearing bloodshed' comment was not purely in jest.@eyeling @bouncinglime Oh no, that's the exact opposite of my family, where I'm the only introvert. Her suffering must be as intense as mine.
🤔 I think there's an idea for a sitcom here.

@eyeling Related to all the online gaming suggestions, joining Twitch may be an option. there are also plenty of folks streaming things that aren't games and I liken it to a "virtual living room" where you can just hang out with folks who are all doing their own thing. chatting as much or as little as you'd like.

@eyeling coming from personal experience, I'd say find something(s) she's been wanting to learn and do an online course or her own research on it, supplemented with addictive shows and strategy games.

@eyeling I spent most of my meniscus surgery enforced downtime playing Satisfactory with a friend. So consider this another vote for multilayer online gaming.

@commonflowergirl That's a good suggestion. It's interactive and involves direct contact to others fot the sake of it.

I was about to make the exact same suggestion with the exact same rationale.
