)01. Oldest OC (re. https://mastodon.art/@jsstaedtler/115730281872447747)
Yeah, that's Ceilidh¹. She was formally "instantiated," along with many other characters, in a story concept I developed in the '90s (and which turned into a daily webcomic in 1999), but Ceilidh specifically evolved from a girl I had drawn repeatedly before then. She was born unwittingly! (And she would not be happy with me putting it that way)
¹ Pronounced "KAY-lee"

It's Serah, the grossly irresponsible angel! When she's not dozing off, she's often sneaking out to the Mortal Realm to party. She eventually gets barred from Heaven and has to surreptitiously crash at a misanthropic demon girl's apartment in Hell.
I simply got inspired earlier this year to draw a sleepy, Bohemian-style angel, and that led to developing an entire bizarre storyline. I'm really hoping to produce something more with it soon...

03. Favourite OC (re. https://mastodon.art/@jsstaedtler/115730281872447747)
Not fair making me choose just one, I like them all for different reasons
but I guess I'll go with Reina. The best explanation I have is she's a caribou who somehow ended up with a human body. She has no real story or motivation, she's just purely sincere and expressive, and it's fun to put her in absurd situations.(And her antlers are super cool, even though they're a royal pain to draw)

04. Favourite OC design (re. https://mastodon.art/@jsstaedtler/115730281872447747)
At the moment it's Serah: I really like her disheveled style, giant wings, and clothes that I can just keep adding to randomly without worrying about fashion crimes.
But otherwise I would go with Anemone—ironically, just about the polar opposite of Serah. Shameless and egregiously attractive feminine beauty, but I especially love colouring her hair.

05. Main reason for making OCs (re. https://mastodon.art/@jsstaedtler/115730281872447747)
I suppose I enjoy imagining other people's lives, and I find that compelling stories emerge naturally from that—*especially* when you put unique individuals together. And I can't deny that I live vicariously through many of my characters, and that there's a lot of wish fulfillment happening.
And I'm not alone in this; I feel a comradery with other creatives and OC artists, and with everyone who enjoys seeing what I'm coming up with.

06. Describe your character creation process (re. https://mastodon.art/@jsstaedtler/115730281872447747)
It's mainly that I want to draw someone with a particular look or style, and then I extrapolate a personality and backstory from that

But if a *lot* of context starts to grow for a character, I'll start fitting them into a larger story, and I'll invent new characters to complement or facilitate that. At least in those cases I get new OCs with more variety and diversity. (cont'd)

I recognize that if I create characters in a vacuum, they will almost always be the same, possessing only my favourite characteristics. For this reason, my OCs are *not* a very diverse bunch, and my skill is severely limited by never working outside a small stylistic box.
I'd like to shift more toward storytelling, and away from mere visual appeal. It takes a lot more effort (explaining why I never did so sooner), but it should lead to better variety and character contrast.

07. Do you ship your OCs with someone else's? (re. https://mastodon.art/@jsstaedtler/115730281872447747)
No, but I ought to

I never even consider that normally, since I have no insight into how other creators' characters would behave or what they would seek in a relationship. I could always just guess (which is hardly different than creating fan art)... or even better, I could have my OCs *flirt* with others and see how they respond

08. Favourite OC ship (re. https://mastodon.art/@jsstaedtler/115730281872447747)
I'm still developing stuff for Serah and Ariel which is a whole lot of fun, but my most fleshed out relationship is between Jillian and Anya. ...Not that anyone but me knows anything about it.
But it's a pillar of a major story idea that I badly want to put into a comic format some day. It's beautiful and tragic and it changes the two of them forever. I know every OC creator says that about their ideas but I *swear* you guys -

Reina the caribougirl.
A lot of artists have wildly creative, non-human characters, but I have mainly plain ol' people. Though there are a few demon girls, a cat-, a mouse-, and a raccoongirl, a mermaid, and now an angel.
There's one "normal human" OC I'm developing who has some questionable hobbies and sometimes awkwardly overshares, if that counts?

10. Villain OCs (re. https://mastodon.art/@jsstaedtler/115730281872447747)
Other than one or two awful stereotypes in a high school drama webcomic produced around 2000/01, no, none of my OCs really count as "villains." I can imagine how creating one could be loads of fun, but I don't generally devise narratives that call for a distinctly antagonistic nemesis type. My characters' worst enemies are generally *themselves*

11. Would you consider yourself nice to your OCs? (re. https://mastodon.art/@jsstaedtler/115730281872447747)
I would say so, insomuch as I don't enjoy seeing them suffer and I intend for them all to eventually find peace and happiness in life. It's just that all the crap they must go through to reach that point makes for good stories

Nope, no dead OCs! But I have a particular character—Piper—whose parents both died, and she failed two suicide attempts and lost a limb.
(Meanwhile there's another OC who might have accidentally committed manslaughter? That's a story concept that needs a lot more work, anyway...)

13. Are any of your OCs parents (re. https://mastodon.art/@jsstaedtler/115730281872447747)
Yeah, just none of my "contemporary" ones. The 1999 webcomic included the parents of several of the high schooler characters, and the various family dynamics drove a lot of plot and character development. This is a more recent drawing of Hildegarde, a single mother who I think had the biggest role among the adult characters.

14. Are there any OCs you find yourself neglecting? (re. https://mastodon.art/@jsstaedtler/115730281872447747)
So many 😭 These are just a few:
- Mitsou: As a punk catgirl, she has big shameless asshole energy that I could be doing so much more with
- Luna: Jillian's reckless friend; kinda gets forgotten when Anya's around (in-story *and* IRL!)
- Koi: A not-too-bright mermaid, but I think Reina pulls off that schtick better
- Ivy: Basically just a tall, hot woman with wicked tats; there could be other roles for her though? -

Reina's antlers are a pain to draw. Ariel has hoofed feet that I'm still trying to figure out, and I keep forgetting to draw her wings and tail. Ceilidh's hair is still a bit challenging even to this day.
As for writing: Tara exists simply because I badly wanted an Irish woman
but she's become a central player in a big story concept. I feel I need to do major research before I can properly portray her... -

I've never considered what anyone's canonical height is; instead, I have a vague idea of who's taller than who. And even then, I don't depict it consistently in my drawings. 😑
But I figure Ariel (pictured) is the tallest, owing to her demonic constitution. Reina's probably also uncomfortably tall (even without her antlers). Anya is the tallest human.
Shortest: Tara. Big (little) gremlin energy.

@jsstaedtler Aaah, who thought freckles, glasses and demon wings would be such a cool combination. I love it!
