I think the grossest part of this is that using ethnicity or race as a disqualifier for holding the Mayor's office is not new. It was a campaign issue for Fiorella LaGuardia in the 30s, arguably one of the greatest mayors in US history. I am old enough to remember it as an issue when David Dinkins ran in the early 90s to become the city's first Black mayor.

I know that solidarity and consistency are hard to find in electoral politics, but it feels gross that an Italian American and a Black candidate are repeating similar race-baiting smears as were used against Italian American and Black candidates in elections past.

Anyway, I hope this is a step forward for Muslim Americans and Arab Americans*. And I hope Cuomo, Adams and Sliwa get righteously trounced and go slinking off to whatever sleazy den they crawled out of.
