For my fifth wedding anniversary, my wife bought me a Treehut watch and engraved it with a personalized message. The watch band is in fairly bad shape (especially after wearing it day-in day-out in Hawaii for most of a month) and the strap itself is incompatible with anything but itself (boo on them).
Anyhow I looked into it and found a Reddit thread with these watch afficionados absolutely ripping the shit out of the watch. Calling it trash, $10 quartz, etc.
But you know what? I own a couple watches... including a decent looking Fossil, and a Timex weekender (the watch to buy first, according to said watch afficionados), and you know what watch gets me the most compliments, by far? (Like 10+ vs 0 for the rest.)

Just funny to think about. Perceived social value vs. demonstrable social value.
