I needed a basic timer on Linux and so in installed gnome "clocks" via the program "software". This works fine for that purpose, but when you open it it greets you with the time in your "current location". It gives me new york for some reason and I do not live in new york, and my time zone is set as America/Chicago so I don't know how it came to that conclusion. Naturally there is no setting exposed to change this. What.

probably also worth noting: the purpose of the timer was I wanted to eat my lunch and draw a picture within 30 minutes, and because the application contained a timer and an irritating bonus distraction my lunch break ended up being eating my lunch and touching Linux. the idea might come back to me again but I don't remember what I wanted to draw

@aeva God, Gnome Clocks is so painful. I know Gnome as a whole has a reputation of "what if we brought bad phone UI to computer?" but Gnome Clocks is so out of the "Gnome UI Overton Window" that I'd imagine even the most staunch Gnomers would look at it with disappointment. Not even the worst Android clock apps are that bad.
I'm on KDE at home and their clock app is just... So good. It's no TimeR Machine but it allows multiple simultaneous timers, alarms, the whole shebang with nice clean UI.

"You don't need this option at this exact moment, so we'll hide it." Once you do finally need it, *your prior knowledge of this interface is working against you*. Finding the new button is like proofreading your own writing - your internal model dominates your ability to take in what's in front of you.

@Gina careful what you wish for. Madrid recently had a year with daily highs cracking the 40°C mark with 46 days in one single year with daily highs above 35°C. There have been 4k+ heat related deaths in Spain 2025. The whole of Catalonia, including Barcelona, recently was under severe drought with water restrictions imposed on the whole population, up to restrictions regarding using showers.

nel '98 in Università la Rete rappresentava una inesauribile fonte di conoscenza ed informazioni. Il motore di ricerca era Lycos, e sostanzialmente si andava nei data center di altri atenei a cercare quel che poteva servire, ma si andavano anche a cercare risorse nella società civile e nell'industria. Era una grande biblioteca con un sacco di scaffali con scritto "Siamo qui, sappiamo questo, facciamo questo".
Adesso è una merda totale di banner e pubblicità, meta e AI, inutile alla conoscenza

@c_merriweather @Remittancegirl oh, if you expect to have to do alterations then 100% no french seams, they are a PITA to unpick (and it's harder to store enough fabric in them).
And if you're working under theatrical (or equivalent) deadlines I can definitely see how french seams may not be the best choice.
But what's the problem with the washings? I tend to put french (and flat felled) seams in my pajamas and underwear *precisely* because they are a strong finish that will survive being washed weekly or so in a regular, non delicates, load (and afaik were also used historically for the same reason in stuff that was washed with traditional methods involving boiling and beating and generally harsh treatments)
