@hpod16 @dalcacer
imho no tax money needed for the fediverse. But support is very much needed. Support by presence (like yours), by taking it serious, by publicity.
It would be a slap in the face, though, if the EU would fund projects like W with money. The linked article https://bingx.com/en/news/post/eu-backs-million-launch-of-w-to-rival-x-beta-slated-by-february to me sounds as if the EU indeed is funding it: "European Union institutions and allied policymakers are supporting a €500 million initiative to launch W" -
@ekari @hpod16 the EU already has a digital ID wallet program, which has local member state support in various ways. I don’t think I need some random new social media platform to invent it. What this W-social-thing is, beyond opportunistic headline grab, no one knows. https://ec.europa.eu/digital-building-blocks/sites/spaces/EUDIGITALIDENTITYWALLET/pages/694487738/EU+Digital+Identity+Wallet+Home

@dalcacer funded by who though?
Seriously asking.
Do you think that public institutions should get involved in funding social media platforms as a service? Would you want your tax-euros to go to that? -
@karlos @BrennpunktUA @hpod16 it would be useful if the filter option included a size limit. I would like to be able to fold up under a warning the occasional very long post i see. Scrolling in a phone using the Mastadon app can be a little annoying when it's a wall of text im not interested in. And i often am reading from old to new so i see the end first.
@jetsoft @karlos @BrennpunktUA
I agree the phone app is a little... clunky.
I much prefer using Mastodon on my laptop.
Luckily that's my job and being logged in on social media 8 hours a day is already what I do. 💜 -
For everyone, because of marketing. "Go check out mastodon.eu*" works much better than "You know, there is this great mastodon-thing, go search for it, and then find an instance that suits you..."
It's too complicated 🙂
Once people are in and look around and realize what's what, then they'll (possibly) seek another instances. And they should, since multiple instances is sort of the whole point.
[* or whatnot 🤡 ]
@ekari
It's that first step that is tricky. Finding the instance that suits you before you've had a chance to explore the platform.
That said, migrating instances isn't impossible, I just think that initial step overwhelms people. It did, me, the first time I tried MD years ago.
I probably still have a mastodon.social profile somewhere out there -
@hpod16 yes I have heard of it, but not joining because we have, for starters, several European instances of Mastodon, which is European in origin. Also, I am not showing my ID card or whatever gives my identity to use it. Not very fortunate that take.

@hpod16 @ekari Yeah. In Sweden we have "de-facto" digital ID (BankID) which started as digital identification for bank transactions, but is these days used in all government/municipal e-services, picking up packages and booking a time at hairdresser. Most of these are services where identifying yourself is necessary/beneficial - and so far the Internet and Social Media hasn't fallen into that category, and there's a lot of friction (rightly so) with identification online.

1. the vulture capitalists have a plan that takes 500 M€
2. Someone attached to the EU has said a kind word about the idea of a non-US social media platform.Not necessarily there being any direct connection even in the statements, even less so any funding from the EU.
-
@hpod16 @ekari Exactly, it's not really a "tech problem" because most member states already have digital identity equivalents. It's more of a philosophical/privacy related problem - with something (the Internet) which we perceive as "free". I identify myself with verification links here (and there's only two people with same name in Sweden so I'm ridiculously easy to identify) so for me it wouldn't be a huge step to use digtial ID to log on.

There was a bug bounty program and some 43k € well spent.
It might he wise to re-assure the commission by participating at https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/news/commission-opens-call-evidence-open-source-digital-ecosystems

@Gurre @rudi @hpod16 And coming from my original comment: I don’t thought of a money grab towards the EU but the general, let’s have a network funded and add some ads and algorithms to add some value for businesses.
In context of the buyFromEU/buyeuropean gist (on reddit and lemmy) this ideas get floated every second day. Mostly in regards to linked in and X.

Have you heard of W Social?
https://wsocial.eu/
Another platform branding itself as a European alternative to US big tech.
(another would be Monnett social)@hpod16 what comes to mind is "double why?? we already have the Fediverse !"

(another would be Monnett social)@hpod16 Welcome to Mastodon, Hannah. It’s good to have a real human being here from the commission (so far, we’ve only had the main account, which is mostly a post-only source of empty platitudes).
Regarding W: It’s exactly the kind of “alternative” we don’t need. We don’t need to build our own torment nexus and slap an EU flag on it: https://mastodon.ar.al/@aral/115932181066382822
What we do need are more noncommercial, independent initiatives working for the common good that are funded from the common purse. Here’s a short talk I gave at the European Parliament about this that goes into more detail: https://ar.al/2019/11/29/the-future-of-internet-regulation-at-the-european-parliament/
We’re working on building one such alternative, the Small Web (a free and open, noncommercial peer-to-peer web of personal social web sites), at Small Technology Foundation, our tiny two-person not-for-profit based in Ireland: https://small-tech.org
Again, welcome; looking forward to your posts :)

@hpod16 lol, I just tried this URL: https://stage.wsocial.eu
It simply IS Bluesky. There's only Bluesky posts there, but pretending to be an European alternative 🤡 Unfortunately, WSocial has got full media coverage today. But
that actually works, does not!@BrennpunktUA@mastodon.social where did you find the link? Does it use the Bluesky relay? That would be a hell of a start for our european independent social network @hpod16@eupolicy.social
