I got a demo of a GPT-5 AI tool yesterday and some other bits. Its grasp of language is amazing. I'm torn at the moment between the commercial necessity of doing SOMETHING with AI, and my personal feelings of AI being a bad thing for creatives.
Does anyone else find themselves conflicted when it comes to AI?

@andypiper I just don't know how we reconcile our personal feelings with the commercial realities of "If we don't do it, someone else will"!

@recantha the strip mining of past human endeavour and creativity without credit is deeply corrosive and painful. The capability of some of the tooling is remarkable. The wastefulness is incomprehensible. It is all very difficult to reconcile.

@andypiper @recantha There's AI and there's LLMs. The real AI has been doing stuff like checking for cancer and the like, for a fair bit of time I'm led to believe. I'm fine with that AI.
The AI being peddled by all and sundry is not really AI, it's using "stolen" data to make educated guesses or simply to make shit up! I don't like this at all, especially as Meta used illegal copies of my books to train whatever passes for its "AI" offerings!
Call my grumpy!

@NormanDunbar @recantha absolutely. The bundling of Machine Learning, smart algorithms, LLMs etc and labelling of any of it “AI” is a misnomer and also very damaging to wider understanding. I’m right there in camp grumpy!
