@cogitoblood @LillyHerself oh well that’s potentially different what’s the book
-
@cogitoblood @LillyHerself A kids book with a trans character can’t cross a line unless the line you’ve drawn is “exposure to a class of human being that exists and deserves to be happy and respected” imo. Kids should learn early on that there are tons of different kinds of people so that they grow up to be more tolerant than we are, because ultimately to get to your “none of anyone’s business” you’d have to increase tolerance.
@notkoalas Until fairly recently most children's books only had boy characters in the lead roles, and if girls were mentioned at all, they were kind of peripheral figures. You even see this as recently as "Harry Potter".
This helped normalise male dominance in the workplace and society at large.
It's the same thing with people who aren't basic boy or basic girl. It's important also to have disabled people in children's books - because they exist too. "Deal With It", right? -

@A_Minion @LillyHerself If it's not a choice, then no one is choosing, ergo everyone is following their physiology, because it's not a choice.

@LillyHerself Now THAT is the operative question any time something like this comes up.
"How does it affect you in any meaningful way?"

@Aerliss @LillyHerself || That sounds much like "If we had ham . ." You find something errant in my post?

@FlashMobOfOne I've seen another smart reply along those lines, abt same-sex marriage. Something like "If you are against same-sex marriage, just say no if someone the same sex as you asks you to marry them."
(the original was funnier, I must see if I can find it again) -

(the original was funnier, I must see if I can find it again)@LillyHerself It works more often than you'd think.
Most people are so hopped up on thought-terminating cliches that a moment of clarity can actually get them to think it through.

@Aerliss @A_Minion good point.

@LillyHerself Its none of anyone's business really, but when some of the stuffs reaches children's books, it crosses the line. Everything less than that is fine to everyone rly regardless of their beliefs. Extremists exists on both sides so maintaining a balance is the best solution.
There is no such thing as sides. Positions are extreme according to what they imply should happen.
The position that trans kids should be denied acceptance and recognition until they submit or kill themselves is extreme. That trans kids should be allowed to figure out who they are and then live their best life is not extreme.
There's no way to make it extreme except in the delusion of a preferred point of balance between *any* 2 things no matter how unjust one is.

@cogitoblood Why is gay, queer or trans people in kids books “crossing a line”? Should kids only hear about straight people?

@petealexharris
"That trans kids should be allowed to figure out who they are and then live their best life is not extreme"I will not deny that some people are born intersex for which they must go surgery. But most kids are born normally with normal gender qualities. The fact that people forcefully put doubt into these children on what their gender truly are or that "no knows what gender they are till they grow up" is what pisses me off. Trans kids shouldn't exist unless you are counting for intersex born people.

@BarneyDellar Not that but some kids book has put statements such as "no one know what gender they are till they grow up" like my countries previous gov tried to do. The problem isn't having gay or trans people but promoting the belief of it in kids book. Not all people support trans beliefs but that doesn't mean they are homophobic and believe they should die just for believing in a diff ideology.

How many trans friends and relatives do you have? -
@cogitoblood
How many trans friends and relatives do you have?@petealexharris That question isn't relevant to the topic at hand. But I do have friend from the LGBT community.

@cogitoblood
It's relevant to whether you know what you're talking about. You just said a whole category of people you don't know and that society tends to treat pretty badly shouldn't exist. But they do exist. Now what?While we're talking shoulds and should nots, I think you should get some trans friends to listen to, and should not talk about the subject until you are informed by them of where you're getting this all wrong.
I assume this will take a while, so muting you for now.

@cogitoblood How can you have gay characters in a book, without promoting the belief in gay people? You seem to be suggesting that gay/trans characters shouldn’t be in kids books. I fundamentally disagree. Representation really matters.
