Is the cherry tree of a kind that has fruit that is nice for humans to eat? (We have only wild cherry trees here. Birds love the fruit, but they're not much fun for us. We've planted some edible cherry varieties, but they are far from the flowering stage yet, and I don't even know if the flowers look similar.)

The cherry trees do indeed produce edible cherries, but the birds nearly always beat us to them. I planted a whole bunch of cherry trees, mainly to help out the local Eurasian jaybird population. Which seems to be working. More fruiting trees really helps out all the birds, but the Jays are particularly fond of cherries.
