Signal massively downloaded amid rising tensions, number one in Denmark 🇩🇰 🇬🇱

What do you make of session's connection to a crypto something-or-other?
@MarvinFreeman @aboutsignal @pluralistic Interesting. I see from Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_(software) :
Session uses the Loki blockchain network for transmissions. In 2021, an independent review by the third-party Quarkslab verified these claims. In 2025, Session announced that it had migrated to its own network, the Session Network — a decentralized, open-source blockchain network designed to transmit encrypted data, specifically for the Session messenger.
I'm not knowledgeable enough to make a call on this. Interested in others' thoughts...

@aboutsignal
- Proprietary closed server instance
- Centralized
- On US servers
- Through US servers services
- Under US laws
- Still w/o user-owned private key(s) ?
- Still w/o encrypted contacts list ?
- Still w/o encrypted exchange history ?What could go wrong ?
@TehAppKiller @aboutsignal this is not true. Signal's server is open source. Signal does not control user encryption keys. Signal does not store user contacts. Signal backups are encrypted.

@alexblock @aboutsignal @pluralistic I'm sorry. I didn't mean session itself.
I meant this:
https://token.getsession.org/faq#what-is-session-token
With the possibility of "premium" features.

Give better alternatives
@jztusk @TehAppKiller @aboutsignal We use this:
It works superbly. Unfortunately, owned by zoom.

@aboutsignal
What is purpose of demanding phone number verification for sign up?
Why linux phones are not supported and only Android (Google) and iOS (Apple) duopoly considered?
What it does mean when it is said that "Tablets are not supported" here? https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360008216551-Installing-Signal -
Session seems a more robust solution:
Our family immediately left WhatsApp for Signal in January 2025, based on the US election and the 51st state threats. Now I am thinking Signal wasn't the best choice due to it's dependency on US infrastructure...
Thoughts?
I have been using, am happy with and can highly recommend SimpleX:
It's not as polished and is a bit more technical, but for me the extra effort was worth it.
Another issue with Signal--apart from using AWS and Google servers and being US based--is the fact that you need a mobile number and a smartphone. If you don't log in for a while with an iOS or Android app, your Signal account is deleted. I learned it the hard way. Thus, I set up SimpleX, informed my family and friends and did not look back.

@aboutsignal Signal relying on USA servers, maintained by an USA foundation, presided over by an USA resident. Yeah I guess?
I still like and use Signal, but how do you plan to operate in a fascist country?

Strange allmost all are downloading random apps. Xmpp is the best solution. Host your own server or you have multiple servers In Europe too. No need do rely on anything single service

@aboutsignal Are you dumb ?
So since US tension you move to an US ONLY app (Amazon, Google, Microsoft server only) ?
Dumbness/20

@aboutsignal thanks for reminding me to download Signal.
@lucien_pca @aboutsignal yeah download the US app, on US server, with US fondation controlling it and Source on US GIT
-
@aboutsignal@mastodon.social
Hopefully, more and more people in Europe will switch away from the fascist tech bros from the USA.@anikke @aboutsignal Singal IS US tech
-
@aboutsignal Every European should do the same. While our leaders are constrained by dependence on the US, we as citizens have the freedom to take action.
@SirpaSK @aboutsignal Signal IS us technology, by US on US server controlled by US fundation and source on US git
-
@lucien_pca @aboutsignal yeah download the US app, on US server, with US fondation controlling it and Source on US GIT
@lexinova @aboutsignal I'm not happy about it, but the European alternatives are really not there yet... at least it's not more data for Meta to grab.

@lucien_pca @aboutsignal it's why i have installed the 2 apps, @delta@chaos.scial and @session
Also i would recommend you to move out of mastodon.social to an EU server of mastodon (like mine), because mastodon.social use US CDN and US DNS, so a US cut will cut you out of their server.
if you want to know witch country a website use go to : https://bgp.tools/ put the url in start here, click on the button and you will see to the right of the IP the flags of the country

@RaffKarva @alexblock simplex is controlled by US server, https://bgp.tools/dns/simplex.chat, https://bgp.tools/dns/simplex.im, https://bgp.tools/dns/simplexonflux.com
so we cannot trust them

That’s a very wrong statement.
Firstly, you can run SimpleX on your own VPS or on a server in your own house.
Secondly, SimpleX uses decentralised infrastructure that consists of user-operated nodes, similar to Tor or Fediverse, and it’s spread out throughout the world.
Lastly, when using SimpleX, you can choose which individual servers you want your messages to be routed through, so you can disable any nodes you wish. The only servers I use are all EU based.
