@glyph I approve of this message.
(Not that you need or asked for my approval. It's just another thing you have.)

@glyph I agree with you of course, but we do have an economy where the name of the game is externalising as much of the cost as you can onto some other sucker/the public
-
@glyph Gallows humor isn't as funny if you don't think about the gallows frequently enough to be a point of reference.
-
@datarama yeah while this may be (I hope?) amusingly phrased, it is not a joke. this is actually a pretty serious emotional and executive regulation problem for me right now
-
@glyph it’s kinda the 3am of the year, ya know? Hang in there, the light is about to start coming back.

@xgranade @glyph I gave a talk a couple months back where I updated "A Modest Proposal" to illustrate the rather alarming state we're in re: AI Industry.
This was within a conference where several talks, including a keynote, were focused on how to implement LLM tools into your workflows.
The response I received was surprising to me. It was overwhelmingly positive from the attendees, a standing ovation if I remember correctly (maybe a couple hundred in the room).
It feels like, inherently, many developers have some pent up/repressed feelings toward the situation we're in ... but also, maybe they feel resistance is futile... I really can't say. I observe a lot of cognitive dissonance.
I really do think that in the end, it'd be great if, regardless of where we stand on the "usefulness" debate, we could at least agree on the need for accountability and consequences. (i.e. as Cassandra noted elsewhere, having any sort of useful regulation that's enforceable and pro-worker)

@genehack I am cautiously optimistic for the next couple of weeks. kid is on break, we have no travel plans, I have either completed or failed all my various important short-term projects, we have less social contact and will therefore hopefully not be sick with mysterious (not flu/not covid) respiratory illness for the THIRD time, there are no deeply consequential administrative tasks for another 2-3 months…

@pythonbynight @xgranade this is legitimately extremely encouraging. thank you for having the courage to deliver that talk, given the context that you probably did not expect that response.
I am a little surprised, but it does *somewhat* match my experience, that so much of the supposed "enthusiasm" for these tools seems to be a reaction to their perceived inevitability rather than any genuine personal excitement for using them

@genehack so while I expect the quite serious and real trends in the broader geopolitical situation to get much worse, my personal ability to cope and productively react may still be improving in the near term

@glyph @xgranade I admit, I was extremely nervous, but felt it was an important talk to give. Not because I feel like I am a definitive voice or hold the "correct" view, but because I think it's worth examining motivations. The stated goals of those in charge are alarming enough.... That's without even starting to consider the actual externalities...

@pythonbynight @glyph @xgranade very interesting to consider this anecdote from the perspective of working-class solidatrity, too, considering who holds the proverbial keys to these systems (leaving aside local-model whataboutism)

@glyph yeah, our kid is home, which is great, we’re mostly off work for a couple weeks, and I’m planning on going pretty hermit.

@SnoopJ I don’t really understand what is happening with this. I could swear this bottle (I have one large bottle for steam) already has a zillion redists in it. the game pops up a dialog box at launch saying it needs to install the redist, as many have before it: when I click Ok, it crashes. the dedicated “install software” menu has all the redists listed, but it pops up an error dialog saying the install didn’t work, at the end. the redists from the website similarly exit with error.

@SnoopJ but the manual library redirects work fine, upon selecting them it says “built in” as if wine expected this, and then the game launches and works surprisingly well. including providing working support for multiple upscaler things (although fsr is still the only one worth a damn)
