@_elena jfc that didn't even occur to me. so everything, from who you decide to unfollow, mute, block, to DMs; even your searches. and then there’s fingerprinting all devices where you install their app.
@blogdiva if you think about it, it’s the last semi-mainstream app/platform not owned by a broligarch (who control Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads, X, TikTok US and Substack)

@_elena what’s his name from Twitter still has a majority ownership though, right? he always wanted BS to be a vector for cryptocurrency.
i think hiding Bain’s investment has more to do with Bain’s history of investment parasitism. Bain doesn’t invest to grow businesses. Bain invests to cannibalize and grow themselves.
i can see a situation in which Bain demanded complete access to user data and Bluesky having to create a secret API for Bain.
in other words, took a year to backdoor Bluesky

@blogdiva "took a year to backdoor Bluesky" sent shivers down my spine. Ouf. Can I say it wouldn't surprise me?
BTW a lot of European politicians and institutions are more active on Bluesky than the Fediverse... connect the dots

been pondering this Bluesky mess, and i think i found a reason for why Bluesky executives didn't want people to find out they took 100 million from Bain Capital:
❝ "The Atmosphere currently contains about 20 billion public records—the posts, likes, comments and o͟t͟h͟e͟r͟ i͟n͟t͟e͟r͟a͟c͟t͟i͟o͟n͟s͟ ❞
what other interactions are there beyond posts, likes and comments?
oh, right: DIRECT MESSAGES.
so is this why they kept quiet? that the money was contingent upon them redefining public to include DMs?
@blogdiva it's not hidden, when there is no e2e encryption and relays see everything
PDS information are publicBluesky doesn't hide it (neither mastodon instance admin who can do the same)
(No need to backdoor public data)

@blogdiva @_elena I think you mean Dorsey: According to Wikipedia "In May 2024, he announced he was no longer on the board of directors".
Unclear if still shareholder, apparently no controlling majority, if so. (edit: see below, he seems to be out)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Dorsey#Bluesky
But no material difference, I'd say.

@blogdiva I imagine "other interactions" includes follows, subscriptions and blocks — all of which are useful data points for determining sentiment and affiliation.

@blogdiva Follows, blocks, reposts, user / moderation lists, starter packs, etc. DMs aren't and won't be public, obviously, so the "20 billion public records" doesn't include DMs. Although yes, in the current version they are accessible to Bluesky PBC since they're not encrypted.

@blogdiva They've been pretty open about the fact that they can access the DMs and so you shouldn't use them for anything very sensitive, they said "if you want private DMs, then just use the DMs here to exchange contacts on Signal and do the conversation on Signal"
