Alright. So today I am going to see if I can get my Windows 10 machine set up for another year of security updates. And I am going to see if I can do it without:
- Changing my local login to log in with a Microsoft account,
- Signing up for OneDrive,
- Signing up for any paid XBox service,
- Moving to the EU.("Moving to the EU" is actually a thing I'm potentially willing to do, but I don't think it's a process I can complete before next Wednesday when Win10 reaches the end of normal support.)

So for starters, I am following these instructions.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/extended-security-updates
When I get to the point of "Enroll Now", it wants me to sign in with a Microsoft account. Wow, I sure do hope this is part of payment/licensing, and it's not going to covertly convert my local login account to a Microsoft-account login!

Okay, so this is nice, I just saved $30. Except wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. "you've previously backed up your Windows settings". What the fuck does that mean? I didn't consent to that. Is Microsoft informing me that at some point they copied data off my computer to one of their servers, and did not tell me? What data? When? Why?
