Alright. So today I am going to see if I can get my Windows 10 machine set up for another year of security updates. And I am going to see if I can do it without:
- Changing my local login to log in with a Microsoft account,
- Signing up for OneDrive,
- Signing up for any paid XBox service,
- Moving to the EU.("Moving to the EU" is actually a thing I'm potentially willing to do, but I don't think it's a process I can complete before next Wednesday when Win10 reaches the end of normal support.)

So for starters, I am following these instructions.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/extended-security-updates
When I get to the point of "Enroll Now", it wants me to sign in with a Microsoft account. Wow, I sure do hope this is part of payment/licensing, and it's not going to covertly convert my local login account to a Microsoft-account login!

Okay, so this is nice, I just saved $30. Except wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. "you've previously backed up your Windows settings". What the fuck does that mean? I didn't consent to that. Is Microsoft informing me that at some point they copied data off my computer to one of their servers, and did not tell me? What data? When? Why?

There's a second problem. At the bottom it says "By selecting Enroll, you agree to the Extended Security Update TOU". Well, I definitely should read those Terms of Use then! The "Extended Security Update TOU" link goes to this page https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/useterms , which doesn't contain the string "Extended" on it. I only find, under "Windows"->"10", a link for "Microsoft License Terms" last updated July 2017. Microsoft is demanding I agree with a Terms of Use I'm not being given an opportunity to read.

Okay! That was easier than I expected, compared to the advice I was given. Now I just have to worry about whether Microsoft enabled one of their data-stealing features without telling me and if so whether it's still on. I guess. And also the fact that I will not want to use Windows 11 any more in one year than I do now.

Reminder that if you want your Windows 10 machine to keep receiving updates you need to follow these instructions https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/extended-security-updates before the program ends "on October 13, 2026"

@mcc You can enroll before the program ends on October 13 _2026_, a very important detail.

@mcc If you don't mind me asking, what does moving to the EU have to do with this? I'm in the EU, so I just wonder if there are anything specific terms for us old continentals. Can't find anything with a quick search.

@lorancou If you are in the EU, Microsoft is required to waive the $30 fee, because the EU has ordered them to. My source is a news article I read in the last week. I recommend simply following the ESU enrollment process, and if it says "you're in the EU! it's free!" then you win, if it says "give us $30" then search Google News to see if you can figure out, assuming I'm right, how to convince Microsoft you are in the EU.
