  • @heluecht @evan delivering to an "instance" and expecting that the instance can infer who should get the message means that the delivering side isn't as in control of where the messages go, it violates the actor model, and precluded several possible directions for a more capability-oriented model which I think the fediverse should have pursued. I don't think "inferred recipients" is a good design. The poster (or more accurately, the addressed collection) knows best its recipient list.

  • @heluecht @evan I'm also glad sharedInbox exists!

The issue I had with sharedInbox was that I was proposing that it should respect the actor model for delivery and we could do this by the posting server adding an HTTP header which listed all the intended recipients. However, Mastodon's devs said "no, we're already tracking the follow lists ourselves so we'd rather use our own information"

And I conceded to that at last minute because we needed to get the spec out. This lead to several issues!

  • @lgsp sbagli.

I've been using this exact distinction for a while now. Since Korean, my native language, has distinct terms for the system (<span lang="ko">런타임</span>), the point in time (<ruby lang="ko">實行時<rp>(</rp><rt>실행 시</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby>), and the duration (<ruby lang="ko">實行時間<rp>(</rp><rt>실행 시간</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby>), using a single spelling for all three in English always felt a bit blurry to me. This spelling convention helps bridge that gap and makes technical writing much more precise. Personally, I find the meaning as indicated by Google's style guide the most clear, combined with an explicit case for hyphenation: Runtime: use the system meaning. E.g. “the runtime was updated last week,” or “I'm using version 21 of the Java runtime.” Run-time: use the moment meaning, but only when used in the adjective position. E.g. “run-time instrumentation is useful for finding bugs.” Run time: use the duration meaning. E.g. “the run time was reduced by 5%,” or “a run time of five minutes is unacceptable.” In addition, when you want to use the moment meaning, but not as an adjective, this form should also be used. E.g. “typechecking happens at run time in our implementation.” —<cite>My Opinion on Run Time vs. Run-time vs. Runtime</cite> (by Bob Rubbens)

It felt like -8C and I had a wonderful ride to work, and with company! I still need snow tires. For today I just took it really slow and careful in case of any hidden ice. #velotaf #BikeToWork
