No, scientists do not communicate particularly well. Even to their peers. Most seminars are impenetrable to more than one or two people in the audience after the first couple of slides — and those people are usually the people who invited the speaker.
But I don’t think this is a flaw in how scientists communicate, it’s a problem with how our working culture means we value “looking smart” over “explaining well”, even though good explanations definitely make the speaker look smarter too…
