🛩️🇱🇹 HIdden inside an old hangar, somewhere in Lithuania, are some interesting old aeroplanes. A pair of 1960s Yak-18T and a mysterious “experimental” glider!
just realized that schild's ladder is the solution to langoliers. the novo-vacuum and the langoliers describe one and the same problem; so does the "twisted" episode from voyager season 2 (and many more): a field is going to go through us, and it will certainly be deadly.
but the responses are different:
langoliers: get the fuck out
twisted: do nothing, it will be fine
schild's ladder: build a compatibility layer, it will be fine
I find this remarkable:The Dresden Codex, one of the few surviving Mayan manuscripts, contains tables that give highly accurate timings of solar eclipses over more than 700 years, from 350 CE to the 12 century. https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adt9039 #history #science #astronomy
Melissa's turbulence was so rough that a "hurricane hunter" flight had to abort. NOAA aircraft flying through Melissa recorded winds of 220 mph just a few thousand feet above the ground. Meanwhile, ground-level wind speeds were measured at 160 mph.Melissa is now Earth's strongest storm of 2025Its maximum sustained winds are 175 mph with stronger gusts as of 2 p.m ET, according to the National Hurricane Center. That’s a 10 mph increase in winds from the 11 a.m. ET advisory.https://www.cnn.com/weather/live-news/hurricane-melissa-jamaica-landfall-monday-climate#Hurricane #Melissa #Catastrophe #Wind #Aviation #AvGeek
@JubalBarca Two egregious things about Academia.edu:1) their new TOS are "irrevocable" and "transferable", and explicitly include the use of your name, likeness, photo and voice "for any purpose." They could literally make you the new spokesperson for neo-nazis, or chicken mcnuggets, under those terms.2) someone here says that Academia.edu has already sent out emails purporting to be from them, urging folks to join academia.edu or whatever. One went to a leading figure in the person's field.@histodons #academia
