@RecoveredExpert @tobi82 @larsmb @jwildeboer I moved from Minio to SeaweedFS. After testing Garage and SeaweedFS for many small files (the BSD Cafe media), I found that SeaweedFS is (was?) much more performant, for that specific workload. I've written something about it: https://it-notes.dragas.net/2025/11/06/self-hosting-your-mastodon-media-with-seaweedfs/

Thanks. 🙏 I will check it out. I need to migrate an eGovernment solution that is currently using min.io as S3 storage.
Performance is not our main concern, but reliability and data integrity. The docs I found so far are not very detailed regarding the cluster setup (kubernetes), let’s see.
Did you found any best practices regarding this?

@tobi82 @stefano @RecoveredExpert @jwildeboer For an eGovernment solution with reliability needs, I'd consider giving a company like Clyso a call about getting Ceph deployed.
Neither garage nor Seaweedfs have truly commercial backing, as far as I can tell.
Though it's worth pointing out that Chainguard has forked minio and is continuing to maintain it in exchange for cash, too.

I wanted to avoid looking for additional budget due to the complexity in such a project.
The s3 is needed to hold attachment files of messages transported via Kafka or rest interfaces. The data needs to be stored a maximum of 7 days. It’s deleted as soon as the Kafka message is processed.
I was hoping for a solution that is simple enough to be managed by the devops or Kafka team. 😬

@tobi82 @stefano @RecoveredExpert @jwildeboer garage is really quite easy to use then.
I don't use Seaweedfs because it's a single developer effectively (though a highly motivated one) and chose a weakly protective license. And it tries to do too much for my taste.

Thanks for the information. Yes a single developer solution won’t do it. I will do a classic evaluation then and search a widely adapted and supported solution.

@tobi82 Feel free to read up at https://garagehq.deuxfleurs.fr/documentation/cookbook/ and the integrations part on how Garage is used in practice. My blog series focuses on homelab use, so I guess nit really of interest to you: https://jan.wildeboer.net/2026/01/1-Local-S3-With-Garage/ Cephfs as S3 is quite a common use case and Ceph comes with support (though not cheap ;) @larsmb @stefano @RecoveredExpert
